15,000 homes to get 'lightning fast' internet as KC extends fibre-optic network
THOUSANDS of people across East Yorkshire will benefit from some of the fastest broadband in Britain.
Hull telecoms provider KC has revealed new fibre cables will provide 15,000 homes and businesses with "lightning fast" broadband.
It has so far only been trialled in 350 homes in Woodmansey and the Great Thornton Street area of west Hull.
The average top speed currently provided by KC's internet provider Karoo is ten megabits per second.

But the new network offers speeds of up to 100 megabits per second.
This allows users to download a music album in just two seconds, an hour-long television show in 31 seconds and a high-definition film in one to two minutes.
Daniel Wheal, 21, of Cambridge Street, west Hull, was connected to the network last November under the pilot.
He said: "It feels a thousand times faster than my internet before. It really is lightning speed.
"It feels so good to be able to stream HD-quality movies and videos and not have to wait for it to load.
"I think this will make a real difference to people's lives."
The multi-million-pound plan involves replacing older copper cables with fibre optics direct to people's homes, increasing broadband capacity and speed.
The new "KC Lightstream" and "KC Lightstream Business" services will be available to 15,000 homes and businesses by the end of the year.
A total of 10,000 installations will take place in east, west and north Hull, with the remaining 5,000 in Beverley and some East Riding villages.
Properties in the Grovehill area of Beverley will be the first to receive the new super-quick broadband, with installations starting on Monday, February 6.
Fibre installations will then follow at:
Priory Park business park in Hessle.
Barnsley Street, Belmont Street and Buckingham Street, off Holderness Road, east Hull.
East Riding villages, including Skidby.
Flats and apartments in areas including Hull city centre.
Parts of Greatfield, east Hull.
Victoria Dock, east Hull.
Parts of Sutton.
Pickering Park area, west Hull.
KC hopes to continue this expansion across the region throughout next year.
Chief executive Kevin Walsh said: "We've embarked on this ambitious fibre roll-out programme to give our customers the best-connected homes and businesses in the UK.
"This will give them access to the world of information, communication and entertainment that the internet offers at lightning speeds.
"At home and in the workplace, we're increasingly living our lives online.
"In the same way that the growth of broadband has led to an explosion in online retailing, entertainment and social media, lightning-fast broadband will bring with it new opportunities that will change the way we live and work."
KC's new fibre broadband services include six packages for consumers from £25 per month and five for businesses ranging from £25 to £100 per month.
The packages have been developed using feedback from those who have taken part in the trial.
Customers can choose a download speed to suit their needs, from 45 megabits per second to 100 megabits per second.
They can also choose from a range of download allowances, up to a 600 gigabytes, with unlimited overnight downloads.
There are also two offers that package phone and broadband services together from £35 per month.
Mr Walsh said: "This investment is the start of something very special for our region.
"At its heart, our fibre roll-out is an investment in the future of East Yorkshire, a catalyst for change that has the potential to transform the region's fortunes and make us an attractive location for further public and private sector investment."
Customers in the Grovehill area can order KC Lightstream and book an installation appointment from today by calling 01482 604911.
