The continuing squeeze on council funding means tough decisions are now being made in Hull.

The delayed implementation of an overhaul of working practices in the city council's business support department is expected to see 240 fewer staff working at the authority when it is completed.

But the cutbacks are unlikely to end there.

Government cuts mean that by 2015, Hull will have lost £90m of Whitehall fund- ing over a five-year period.

New forecasts for the next two years currently suggest the authority is facing a £41m budget shortfall between what it is likely to receive in external funding and what it receives in income from its day-to-day operations.

No wonder councilors are looking anxiously at what is happening elsewhere in local government.

In Newcastle, the council has just announced plans to cut £1.5m of funding to ten arts organisations, including the city's largest theatre, and close ten libraries.
