270 Hull City Council managers on £50,000 salaries
HULL City Council has 270 managers earning more than £50,000 on its books at a time when it is facing unprecedented cutbacks.
Libraries, customer service centres, youth projects, nursery schools and children’s centres are all facing the possible axe under budget proposals due to be debated at a full council meeting next week.

Changes: Hull City Council leader Steve Brady says he is committed to 'rationalising the senior management structure'.
The council’s ruling Labour group’s budget plans also include moves to axe about 600 jobs, as well as long-standing local agreements on staff overtime and car allowances.
Labour leaders say up to 250 jobs could be saved if unions agree to the changes to staff terms and conditions.

But today a pressure group claimed the £16.9m cost of employing 270 managers on £50,000 or more at the council – four times the number at the neighbouring East Riding Council – was the “elephant in the room” at the Guildhall.
Andrew Allison, Hull grassroots co-ordinator of the Taxpayers’ Alliance (TPA), said: “I don’t think having so many comparatively well-paid managers can be justified in this day and age.
“These salaries are not typical for Hull as a city and if other councils can operate perfectly well with far fewer managers then I can’t see why it can’t apply here.”
Collated from data supplied by every council the UK, the TPA figures are for 2011-12.
They show Hull had managed to trim the number of managers earning £50,000 or more by 43 compared with the previous year, producing a saving of £2.2m.
But the city’s total of 270 managers still dwarfed the East Riding’s 63. At North Lincolnshire Council, only 52 staff were listed as earning £50,000 or more.
City council leader Councillor Steve Brady said senior management costs had been substantially reduced since Labour returned to power almost two years ago.
He said: “This administration gave a commitment to rationalise the senior management structure. The changes that we made this year have returned a £500,000 saving in this year’s budget.”

“This is terrible and I for one would never criticse Mr Inglis for his politics, his work ethics or his explanation of this particular debate.
I would however say I've never met such a rude person in my life and hope never to meet him again, if his attitude is relfected in his role as a Councillor I cannot understand how he was ever elected.”

“To answer "bewildered1" I have an Excel Spreadsheet which list all non-school based employees by Grade and numbers in those Grades from the apparently five people on Minimum Wage to the Chief Executive. Its clear from that who are the educational people employed centrally, Advisors on Soulbury terms, Educational Psychologists and temporary Assistant, Deputy and Head Teachers and of course the Coroner. The remainder of "Managers" comes to 63. I have no idea how to post that here but if the TPA had the brains they claim to have they would have FoI'd that information and worked it out for themselves.
A similar Spreadsheet is available for school-based staff.
We've been lambasted because we've answered honestly what was presumably the simplistic question asked, ie "How many people are paid over £50k per annum", the other Councils, no doubt being smart about the TPA's agenda, have presumably massaged that number down as far as they possibly could without actually lying.

“I read a thing on line once that if you debated something online for long enough, you know you'd witnessed the end of the debate as soon as someone refered to their opponant as "Hitler" or a "Nazi".
By my reckoning, this discussion ended yesterday at 2:44pm.”

“Hi Mr Inglis do you have a link or reference to the info that undermines this story? I too am not happy with misinformation but please do not stop posting on here- it leaves the field clear for those who peddle untruths and propaganda. Why not get yourself a website?”

“I don't think I'll be posting on here much again if that is the extent of the HDM's honesty.
Is that a promise Colin,
Well hurry up and P--s off.”

“It seems the HDM can't take criticism of itself! I post a comment about them reprinting a TPA press release without checking the facts when the line it peddles is clearly false, HCC is no different to the other three Humber councils and rather than correct their story and admit fault they take my comment down. I don't think I'll be posting on here much again if that is the extent of the HDM's honesty. They should be apologising to the Council and correcting this story or removing it. To leave it here when it is clearly wrong and they now know that is an affront to their readers. The BBC were no better in their reporting of it last night.
If these media outlets are merely to become vehicles for peddling TPA distortions then maybe we all need to start getting our news from somewhere reliable!”

“The way Councils treat the taxpayer with disrespect is astounding.
Its normally Labour Councils that are leading the way with largesse and waste of taxpayers money
Why is this?
Because most of their voters do not pay tax, in fact they are normally on negative tax. taking other peoples money
So, these people will vote for the most spendthrift and expensive administration.
- Normally Labour
They all like to spend & waste other peoples money
Would we miss these 270 Council employees? You make your own mind up . .”

“What always amuses me is the justification of these salaries. They always tell us that they have to pay these managers obscenely generous salaries to attract them to the public sector.
Well sack them all because im sure the local plumbers merchants are just going to snap up an "Senior LGBT outreach officer"”
