4G launches, but Hull must now wait till 2013
HULL: The faster mobile network 4G will launch today in ten UK cities – but Hull residents will have to wait until next year.
One network, EE, is launching the service but its offering is limited and it will be rolled out in places such as Manchester and Liverpool.
The city was set to be one of the first to enjoy 4G, available on a number of smart phones, and it could have been available next week.
However, due to Government delays, Hull will now have to wait months for the technology.

“Last city to get fibre-optic broadband, and likely to be the last city to get 4G...”

“Is it because NIMBYs keep protesting about masts being put up? If you want these services, then the infrastructure needs to be in place.”

“Oh dear, does this mean that Hull is not a Top Ten City, after all? Surely our elected representatives haven't been telling us lies for all these years - have they?”

“Taken from the beeb this morning - £36 for 500MB of data - An hour's streaming of iPlayer will eat up (potentially) 225MB. Nearly half of you rmonthly allowance in an hour!
Or if you're really rich, £56 will get you a whole 8GB!
This won't be any good until it's opened up to all of the operators next year - Hopefully prices will come down, usage will go up.”

“They are charging an average of £5 a month extra. If people were to boycott paying extra, for what is already a subsidised service, then the providers, EE in this case would have no option to drop the charge.”

“It's nothing to do with government delays at all. EE announced that they would be rolling out their 'early' 4G service in Hull, but for some reason they've changed their mind.
The auction of the specific 4G frequencies is and always has been scheduled to take place in Spring 2013. EE are only able to offer the service now becauce they have been allowed to re-farm some of their large 3G frequency holding (acquired through mergers) to 4G services. This will be to the likely detriment of 3G customers.”
