£50m high-rise hotel gets go-ahead
A new £50m high-rise building which will offer four-star hotel luxury in the heart of Hull has been given planning approval.
International hotel group Millennium Hotels and Resorts is being lined up to open a 141-room venue in part of the 20-storey development next to Myton Bridge, overlooking the River Hull.
Operating under the group's Copthorne brand, it will be Hull's first purpose-built four-star hotel.
More than 100 full and part-time jobs will be created, while another 500 jobs are also expected to be created during construction.
Building work is likely to get under way later this year, subject to final funding for the project being agreed.
Speaking after councillors gave planning permission for the scheme, one of the developers behind the project said every effort would be made to provide jobs for local people.
Matt Wilkins, a partner with Trinity Quays LLP, told the Mail: "We are all delighted by the decision of the planning committee.
"Most of the jobs at the hotel will obviously go to local people, but during the construction phase we have already had discussions with the likely main contractor to ensure as many jobs as possible are made available to local people and local sub-contractors.
"We are aware of how fragile the economy is, not least in having to go back to the drawing board ourselves when the original proposed office element of the scheme fell away."
"To be able to attract a hotel group of the calibre of Millennium to Hull is a testimony to how they regard the potential of the city."
A mixed office and apartment scheme on the same High Street site was given the go-ahead just over 12 months ago, but the subsequent economic downturn forced a re-think over the proposed office space.
Mr Wilkins confirmed the new hotel would include conference facilities, a spa and a top-class restaurant.
Some of the 178 apartments earmarked on the upper floors will also have access to hotel facilities, including laundry, room and maid service.
Prices for the one and two-bedroom apartments are expected to start at £110,000.

“Totally agree with you Ron. One word sums up this point. Crewe. I could mention many other places but that was the first place that sprang to mind. I once had the displeasure of an hour and a half to kill between changing trains there (thank you Arriva Cross Country) so instead of hanging around the station I took a walk into the town centre. Crewe is supposed to be the gateway to the North West. It is anything but and i couldn't wait to get on the train and get out of there. Yes, Hull has its problems but name somewhere in the backward dustbin of Europe that is the UK that doesn't have problems. Let's all be thankful that Hull doesn't carry the burden of a name like Gunchester. I Wonder where I could be referring to!”

“you no we keep going on about this city of ours and let me tell you its not near as bad as some places in the uk or around the world for that matter, hull is ok with beautifull surroundings which would be the envy of many towns or cities ill mention boothferry road as you drive into hull you wont get much better than that anywhere and look at the villages on our outskirts beautifull little places, its a pity all this is not taken into consideration when people from the out side have a go at us,ok that said there are the bad parts but what looks a bigger dump than our capital city london its a disgrace, hull will get there just give it chance, and our city centre is a match for most places”

“What encouraging comments on the whole. it makes a pleasant change to see that most people who have bothered to comment support the proposals and the underlying purpose to give our local economy the shot in the arm that it desperately needs to kick the life back into the regeneration that was slowly beginning to turn Hull into that top Ten City we know it has the potential to be.
Four and Five Star hotels are exactly what Hull needs and deserves. There is no reason why a city of our size should not be able to sustain higher grade facilities. If much smaller places than Hull can boast five star hotels then surely the least we can expect is to be able to provide the modern high quality facilities that visitors to any city, be they on business or holiday, have a right to expect. It is unacceptable that businesses in Hull should have to send their visitors to Leeds to meet their accommodation requirements. What message does that send out to UK plc about Hull?
I fully support this project even if I am not likely to use it on a regular basis because I can see the wider benefit it will bring to the city. the point has already been made about the jobs that it will create both in construction and once it opens and that has to be a positive benefit that we should all welcome. How else can we encourage or expect those who currently pass through Hull on their way to/from the Ferry Terminal to stay in the city if we can't offer them the right accommodation? This is the solution to that problem albeit the start and we can't afford to be complacent. If we can attract a five star Hilton or Hyatt Regency with a developer (Beetham Corporation?) to a prime site (Bond Street?) then Hull van really begin to compete in the international business and leisure market.”

“Whilst i do not begrudge new development in this area i would like millenium to possibly take into account that just 50 yrds away there are 35 empty apartments for sale / rent and have been for 6 months plus now. Also carrying on up the road there are numerous other apartments up to let. Victoria Dock is inundated with empty apartments also and these actually have river views ! My point is do we really need more overpriced apartments in a supposedly 4 star hotel ???”

“Hardman - estoy de acuerdo contigo, los otros son estupidos. Have you lot really got nothing better to do than pick on someone's grammatical errors? Do they really do a degree in 'spelling'? Stop being so mean-minded.”
