Police Community Support Officer Lee Marshall is writing a new column for the Mail’s Hornsea Local website.

This is his first correspondence:

WELCOME to the first update from the Neighbourhood Policing Team at Hornsea. I hope you all had a very good Christmas and happy New Year.

The festive period and the lead up to it have, however, raised a few issues which I would like to mention.

Firstly, it has been well documented that Humberside Police’s major incident team are currently working closely with local officers to continue to investigate a serious sexual assault in the early hours of Christmas Eve.

In the meantime I would continue to urge women in Hornsea to try to avoid walking the streets alone, especially late at night. If you have no choice, carry a mobile phone and if you see anyone suspicious, then cross the road, and if you are still worried ring 999.

It is also worth noting that there have been a number of accidents and difficulties in travelling around the Hornsea area and further a field, due to the poor weather that we have experienced recently.

This may continue, so my top tips would be to ensure that you leave plenty of time for your journey, ensure that the vehicle is de-iced before driving off, windscreen wash is topped up to the correct level and that you carry a mobile phone and ideally an old blanket in your boot just in case you break down. Don’t neglect your tyres; good grip is essential in icy weather. The legal limit is 1.6mm for cars, but it is worth changing when you drop to 2mm. It will also be worth considering whether a journey is essential in extreme conditions.

Car crime remains an issue, with reported incidents of this nature in the Hornsea area being quite high for the month of December. Please remember never to leave valuables in your vehicles overnight. Police have been checking cars and sending warning letters out to owners when anything is seen, and we will continue to do this in the hope of getting our message across to drivers.

We have had issues again with parking on Newbegin in Hornsea, particularly in the area opposite the post office, where vehicles have been parking across private drive-ways, despite the fact that the road says ‘keep clear’ on it.

Police Community Support Officers in Hornsea will be monitoring the situation over coming weeks and offending drivers will be warned and then prosecuted if they continue to park their vehicles in this manner.

There was a run of mindless damage to the Christmas lights which were put up on Market Place and Newbegin, as well as at the Hornsea Freeport for the enjoyment of the public of Hornsea and its visitors.

The Humberside Police website is updated regularly and you can find advice, information and details of your local officers and crime statistics on there through post code searches. The site is www.humberside.police.uk

“Officer, if I may call you such? How do you feel about the new powers that you have been granted by the Council to fine people littering. Will you please use these powers to prevent ERYC from littering our town with their paper?”

    “What codswallop!

If we want community work doing let's pay Community Workers.

Why dress these clowns up as coppers, put 'POLICE' in giant print and 'comunity support officer' in tiny print on their backs, and portray them as a police presence on the streets if all they are is little more than youth club supervisors?

All this teachers, coppers and parents wanting-to-be-the-kids'-best-mate crap is what caused the problem in the first place.

You can't be responsible for instilling discipline on the one hand, and then pretend to be their best buddy on the other.

By Jedward, what a WEAK and FEEBLE person you really are.”

“People knock these guys but do not appreciate the community work they do. They do not have powers of arrest so they cant arrest.
Is it not better to befriend someone to try and prevent them causing trouble or be a pratt and come down to their level.
There are a lot of pople in Hornsea who respect these officers. If you dont then thats your choice.”

“Are you for real? You've obviously got too much time on your hands! GET OUT ON THE STREETS BETWEEN 1900HRS AND 0300HRS AND SEE WHAT'S REALLY GOING ON IN HORNSEA! START LOCKING UP THE LOCAL TOERAGS INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BE THEIR BEST MATE. YOU CLOWNS ARE A DISGRACE, LAUGHING AND JOKING WITH DIVOTS WHO YOU SHOULD BE ARRESTING. YOU'RE TERRIFIED OF THEM!”
