Under-9s shine to beat Hessle >video
BEVERLEY Rugby Union under-9s shone in-front of the Hotshots camera as they beat a determined Hessle side five tries to two.
It is hard to believe little under a year ago the players on show were playing tag rugby, when a tackle is executed by pulling a tag from a player's belt.
This year saw the introduction of scrums, line-outs and tackling, something both sides seemed to have taken in their strides.
Going into the match, the teams had met twice, with both sides winning a game each.
From the start it was easy to see neither team wanted to lose for the second time this year.
In the early exchanges of the first of the two ten minute halves, Hessle looked for an opening and pinned back Beverley.
Thanks to excellent tackling from the likes of Matt Darwin, the home side weathered the early pressure and fiery fly-half Rhys Innes found a gap, ran half the pitch and scored in the corner.
Throughout the game Beverley looked the most powerful at the ruck, however Hessle's passing troubled the home side, as they always looked for the off-load.
Rather than just drive it through the centre, both teams seemed to be trying to get the ball out to the space on the wings.
Beverley were pinned back, and seemed to struggle to stop Hessle hooker Nathan Bush, who, even with three tacklers on him, was still able to make metres.
The Hessle supporters thought they had levelled the scores, but unfortunately for them, Bush was pushed out into touch before he reached the line.
Bush however, did equal the scores shortly after.
From a scrum, the visitors quickly passed the ball out wide, where Bush drove the ball over the line.
In an end-to-end game, both teams were exploiting gaps, with the likes of Nail Carruthers, William Dobson and Bailey Wood all making darting runs, which were brought to an abrupt end thanks to some excellent last ditch Hessle defence.
Nearing half-time, both teams were pushing for the lead. For Hessle, scrum-half Callum Riley seemed to be dictating the play, putting a stop to any Beverley pressure.
It was the home side, however who took the lead thanks to some good work by Dobson, who used the width of the pitch to go in at the corner.
There could quite easily have been more tries, had it not been for Hessle's James Magee, who put an end to Joe Rose's powerful run and a six man tackle to halt Beverley's Alfie Shultz as he neared the line.
Into the second half, and both teams came out firing, with the supporters on the sidelines cheering their teams on.
Very few balls were being dropped by either side, as both teams threw the ball from wing to wing.
Beverley seemed to be the more successful at getting the ball from the ruck, and came close to scoring on two occasions, had it not been for some strong Hessle tackling.
Hessle hooker Haden Radford came close to scoring, but just as he neared the line, a last-ditch Beverley tackler pushed him out into touch.
It was Beverley who extended the lead, when Wood got his first try of the match.
Hessle retaliated, and Ronan Atkinson charged through four tackles to reduce the deficit.
The try seemed to give Hessle confidence, as they pushed the home-side back with some solid effort from Jacob and Drew Parker.
But Bailey eased the pressure for the home side, as he used the space out on the wing to power over to make it 4-2.
Bailey then completed the games scoring with another excellent solo run to make the final score 5-2.
The fast-paced game was an excellent showcase for under-9s rugby and one which was very entertaining for all the spectators.
