Alan Johnson is keen to continue as shadow Home Secretary.
He told the Mail: "Having thought about it over the summer, I have decided to stand for a shadow cabinet post.
"Whether I get elected is another matter.
"I would be delighted to continue as shadow Home Secretary which I think is a real Achilles heal for this government."
The shadow cabinet will be elected by the Parliamentary Labour Party shortly after the new leader is chosen on September 25.
The new leader will then choose which position to give each cabinet member.
