Alternate weekly bin collection plan for East Yorkshire residents

FAMILIES in the East Riding are set to have alternate weekly collections of their bins in recognition of their recycling efforts.

The council's cabinet is expected to agree an alternate weekly collection of the blue recycling bins and green landfill bins from its 149,000 households next week

The new collection service is expected to be rolled out from April, taking up to ten months to complete.

Councillor Stephen Parnaby, leader of East Riding Council, led the praise for residents who, in some areas, are recycling up to 70 per cent of their waste.

He said: "East Riding residents have responded fantastically to recycling.

"This new service is what the residents have been asking for."

Currently, the council collects the blue recycling bins every four weeks and the green general waste bins every week. The brown bins for composting have been emptied every fortnight since 2011.

However, if approved, the five phases of the roll-out, with the green bin collected one week and the blue bin collected the next, would start in the Hedon area followed by the Bridlington, Willerby, Market Weighton and Goole areas.

It is estimated the reduction in the collection of the green bin could save council tax- payers £480,000 per year in landfill tax and £775,000 in waste collection services.

John Skidmore, head of streetscene services at the council, said: "Residents across the East Riding have continued to respond enthusiastically to recycling more materials using the brown and blue recycling bins, which has seen the level of recycling rise steeply in the past few years.

"The trial undertaken this year to collect the blue, brown and green bins every two weeks was introduced following numerous requests received from residents.

"The council listened carefully to residents who were saying they wanted to recycle more in the blue recycling bin and didn't have much left for the green landfill bin due to the extensive range of materials that can now be put in the brown and blue bins."

In Hull, black general waste bins are collected weekly and blue recycling and brown bins (for green and garden waste) are emptied fortnightly.

However, Hull City Council wants to collect all bins fortnightly, which the council claims will save £1m. It could lead to 36 redundancies.

In the East Riding, Nigel Leighton, director of environment and neighbourhood services for the council, said there will be a reduction of 21 posts. However, due to a two-year recruitment freeze to filling permanent posts, there will be no permanent staff made redundant.

He said: "If these changes are approved, there are sufficient permanent posts for all permanent staff.

"Temporary members of staff will be considered for any subsequent roles."

Sally Williams, 43 of Thorngumbald, has welcomed the news.

"I only put one bag a week in the green bin so the roll-out suits me," she said.

"The only issue will be around Christmas but, generally, it will encourage even more people to recycle.

"The trial has been a success."

The decision will be made next Tuesday.
