Ever wondered how the term antifolk came about; who coined it and why? The Adelphi in Hull and Under The Influence (UTI) will play host to the man described as the Mastermind behind the genre, known simply as Lach (pronounced Latch) as he takes his highly acclaimed five star show, from this year's Edinburgh Fringe on Tour. This will be a rare chance to witness the talent of the artist, who has been cited as a major influence and inspiration for a host of highly regarded artists including, Beck, Suzanne VegaRegina Spektor. More recently chart topper and festival favourite Florence Welch (Florence and the Machine) joined Lach on stage for a Velvet Underground duet, at a London show.

Starting out in Greenwich Village in the early eighties, Lach played in places such as 'The Speakeasy' and 'Folk City' but found the conservatism in these once prestigious venues stifling so he set out to change things. "I started the scene in the mid '80s as a rebellion against the lame so-called folk scene that had congealed in the West Village after Dylan went electric," reveals Lach. "We were as inspired by The Clash, The Pistols and The Jam as we were by Woody Guthrie, Phil Ochs, and Bob Dylan."

By way of protest to the folk hierarchy, having nothing to do with his 'punky, scruffy lot', Lach began the infamous out-of-hours club called The Fort. After a number of venue moves, the scene settled down at the Sidewalk Cafe on Sixth Street, in 1994. The list of names who played there reads like a who's who from counter culture; Hamell on Trial, Thomas Truax, Daniel Johnston, Jeff Buckley then later on dyed in the wool antifolkers Moldy Peaches, Jeffrey Lewis, Diane Cluck and lurid Los Angeles comic Rick Shapiro.

"Lach is the best songwriter I've ever met." - Adam Green (of The Moldy Peaches)
