AN appeal has been lodged against East Riding Council's decision to reject plans for a wind farm near Howden.

Your Energy Ltd has appealed against the decision to reject the Sixpenny Wood Wind Farm project near Gilberdyke.

The company insists the 10-turbine wind farm will generate enough safe, clean, renewable electricity for up to 12,800 households.

Your Energy Ltd also argued that, with almost 2,500 letters sent in favour, support outweighed objections by nearly five to one.

But in October councillors voted to refuse permission for the scheme due to its 'sheer size and scale'.

Now an independent planning inspector will judge the merits of the application.

Your Energy Ltd's development manager Charlotte Healey said: "This is an excellent site for a wind farm and believe we have excellent grounds for an appeal.

"Not only will Sixpenny Wood Wind Farm make a significant contribution to the battle against climate change, but the level of public support demonstrates that the majority of people in the East Riding understand that we simply have to take action now."

The Planning Inspectorate will now set a date for a public inquiry.

“It's about time this nonsense of expensive appeals by these companies, whose only aim is to make money, was stopped. The other letters have pointed to some of the inadequacies of these wind farms for energy production, so there's no need to repeat the arguments. However, note that these companies are not too keen to speak at gatherings of professional physicists/engineers. They also make little mention of how the power generated by their turbines is converted to a form usable via the national grid. These wind farm schemes are all seriously flawed and should be opposed. In this instance, the council concerned deserves the support of everyone over its courageous decision.”

“Here we go again; the local democratically electected authority is being overruled by big government that knows nothing of local concerns and cares even less.
You know what to do at the next election; don't you?
    Vote the Buggers out.”

“This was totally expected although they produce very little useful electricity. They need 100% backup by some other means of generation, usually fossil fuelled. The main thing they produce is lots of money via subsidy. In the recent cold weather turbines produced nothing, at a time of most need. Governments love them because they are highly visible and give the appearance of them doing something. The claim for the number of homes assumes they have some other form of heating, with heating the figure is much less. These companies should be made to pay for the power shortfall when they fail to deliver what they claim.
They are far less "green" than claimed. masses of concrete, roads to be built, big holes dug, import of most turbine parts, and a lot of maintenance. They are all a massive con which will almost certainly give us future power cuts.”

“This was expected as the amount of subsidy makes them a goldmine. The fact that they are inefficient, require 100% backup, and produce very expensive energy seems to be always overlooked. The fact that overall they are far from green is also discounted. Governments love them because they are highly visible and make it look as though they are doing something. These will give us planty of winter power cuts during the weeks of high pressure.”
