ONE of East Yorkshire's best-known restaurants is set to close, with its owners saying they have taken the award-winning business as far as they can go.

Artisan in Hessle is listed in the Michelin and Good Food Guides and has won a whole host of awards including The Journal Restaurant of the Year last year.

However, husband-and-wife team Richard and Lindsey Johns have confirmed the grade two-listed Georgian town house will close its doors at the end of April.

Mr Johns, a self-taught chef, says they are in talks to buy the freehold of the townhouse and could relaunch the space as a new restaurant in the near future.

He said: "People have been really shocked by the decision.

"It's nothing to be sad about.

"It is time to move on as we have taken Artisan as far as we can.

"We are closing the chapter on Artisan and whatever we do in the future we hope to build on that reputation.

"When we opened up where we did, there were the doubters who didn't think we would last five minutes. We are very proud of what we have achieved."

The restaurant was opened in December 2004.

The couple are going to take some time off and travel around France and Italy to "get inspired about food again".

"We do both want to stay in the area," said Mr Johns.

"When we come back we want to open something more contemporary that will appeal to a wider audience.

"Our current restaurant is still different to 99 per cent of all other restaurants in the area."

“You've done the right thing guys, go out whilst you are at the top of your game. I will look forward to you opening another place in a couple of years and have no doubt it will set an new benchmark in standards and quality. Where you started all those years ago, others followed in your wake. Well done and good luck.”

“Im stunned and saddened at this news. Artisan in my opinion was THE place to dine out in the area, having visited on numerous occassions with work and friends. As for Michelin star awards, just criminal that the restaurant was not ever awarded one. I mean why not?? Would it have any made a difference to the couple staying on perhaps? Artisan will be sorely missed. They set bar in the East Riding. A true one off sort of place.
Again the very best of luck to Richard and Lindsey, you both deserve it. Thank you for some great times.”

“Such a shame, this was a fantastic restaurant. The food was devine and the hospitality was second to none. I spent my 40th birthday here and had a lovely night. Their knowledge on the food and wine is amazing.
I hope they do stay local and come back with new ideas.
I never understood why they didn't get awarded a Michelin star, Artisan is as good as Pipe and Glass in my opinion (I love P&G too)
Good luck to Richard and Lindsay”
