A Hull artist is stepping up to the plate to help raise money for Sport Relief.

For the past week internationally-acclaimed painter Peter Bell has been creating a new work of art in the window of The Myton Gallery in the city's Hepworth Arcade.

The picture, which is entitled Lions And Tigers, puts a distinctly Hull twist on the iconic moment Bobby Moore held aloft the World Cup in 1966.

The painting is now on display in the gallery's window and website where art-lovers are being invited to bid on it until close of play on Saturday.

Peter, whose original pastels usually sell for upwards of £600, said: "I was thinking 'what can I do for my bit to help raise money for what is essentially a very good cause?' I wasn't very keen on running a mile – but what I can do is paint.

"I thought it would be apt to do a sporting themed picture and, as it's a World Cup year, I thought what better subject than to feature Bobby Moore's famous pose, held aloft on his teammates shoulders, in some way?

"The aim is to make a picture that people want to own. There's as much thought gone into this picture as to any other. I was thinking Three Lions, then Hull City, so Lions And Tigers seemed to spring from there.

"It's nice to be able to do something I enjoy and that other people get pleasure from."

Peter's art career began in 2004 when he approached a gallery in Beverley and convinced the owner to display three of his paintings in his shop window.

All three paintings sold within two hours, giving the former barman and van driver the confidence to pursue his talent professionally.

Now, entirely untrained, his works sell all around the world and have been featured on TV. His style, which has been described as "flat cappism" charts everyday northern life with a wry sense of humour and has been compared to highly collectable artists such as Mackenzie Thorpe and Beryl Cook.

As well as painting his new work, 20 per cent of the sales of Peter's collection of other sporting themed works will also be donated to Sport Relief until Saturday.

Peter is no stranger to donating his work to charity. Last year, his painting A Different World was the subject of a frenzied last day of bidding when he auctioned it off in aid of Children In Need.

Gallery owner Charlie Newham said: "Peter's sporting pictures attract lots of interest from people who are real sports fanatics, people who have season tickets for either Hull City, Hull FC or Rovers, or, in some cases, all three.

"So when we both talked about Peter painting a picture in the gallery in aid of Sport Relief, it made perfect sense for it to have a sporting theme. When he came up with the idea, and then told me the title – Lions And Tigers – I just thought it was a brilliant idea.

"I think the finished picture looks terrific.

"Peter is a highly-collectable artist with fans all over the world. There are collectors in places as far afield as Australia, Bahrain and the US, who look out for new pieces, so I expect this one to attract a lot of attention."

*Peter Bell's Lions And Tigers will be on display in The Myton Gallery, Hepworth Arcade, Hull, until Saturday. Bids will be taken until close of business on that day. For more information, visit www.mytongallery.co.uk or call (01482) 323743.
