However, they beat Beverley in a thoroughly absorbing derby clash.
Cook led the side as skipper Chris Murphy and director of rugby Tevita Vaikona were ruled out through injury.
"It's a good feeling to be back to winning ways after the past few weeks" said Cook.
"I was proud to be captaining the side because of the way the boys played.
"It is always going to be tough against Beverley whose league position suggests they are not as good as they are.
"The game as a whole was helped by referee Will Halford, who let things flow and refereed the ball and the breakdown which let us play a bit."
Cook also praised youngsters Ollie Norman in the centre and tight head prop Ben Davis-Rice.
On a heavy and slippery, rather than muddy, pitch it was not a day for fancy footwork but both sides served up bags of effort and no little skill.
Hull took a third-minute lead through a James Cameron penalty.
Beverley levelled three minutes later with an Ian Archibald penalty and showed they were a much-improved side from earlier on in the season, looking dangerous whenever in possession.
On 23 minutes Hull went further ahead with a try from a Maea David converted by Cameron.
Six minutes later Beverley attacked down the Hull left, switched play right before bringing the ball back left for second-row Frayley Hoppa to score in the corner against his old club with Archibald adding a superb touchline conversion.
In stoppage time Hull back-rower Jeff Peek touched down with Cameron converting but another Archibald penalty saw Hull lead 17-13 at the break.
On 64 minutes Beverley went to ground some 46m out and youngster Cameron landed the long-range penalty and an easier shot four minutes later but was wide of the mark on 75 minutes.
In injury time promising young centre Norman, makng his first start for Hull, was sent away by David before the ball was switched to second-row Darren Wigg, who wrapped up a man-of-the-match performance by scoring an unconverted try in the corner.
