BEVERLEY produced a much-needed win, clinching a 25-12 victory over West Park St Helens.

The game will not linger long in the memory, but Beverley played far better than their error-strewn effort the previous week against West Hartlepool.

They were certainly good value for their win even though they did make fairly heavy weather of beating a gritty but average West Park.

Beverley stormed away from the kick-off and within two minutes had taken the lead with an Ian Archibald penalty when West Park were caught offside in front of the posts.

Beverley looked as though they could well cut loose but West Park slowly got themselves into it and it was another 25 minutes before Beverley added to their lead with another Archibald penalty.

Beverley were much tidier and more threatening in their backplay than West Park although it was only Jerry Barnes from full back who seemed able to inject any real pace into things.

Junior Tupai made several powerful breaks in the centre and once was unlucky to be held up after getting over the line.

However, nothing was lost because from the ensuing five-metre scrum David Worrall peeled off from the back row to cross for the game's first try.

With Archibald converting Beverley at last looked to be on their way.

But within three minutes West Park struck back.

Beverley lost the ball in a breakout from defence, West Park kicked towards the corner, and winger Neil Best tapped through between two defenders to race over and touchdown.

Fly half George Tossel added the conversion.

Although West Park were getting plenty of possession their score was against the run of play and Beverley deservedly recaptured the initiative with another try from Worrall who rounded off some slick crossfield passing. to force his way over.

At 18-7 a comfortable victory looked to be on the cards for Beverley.

Twenty minutes into the second half they stretched their lead with a third try for Worrall who looped around from a five-metre scrum, Archibald again adding the conversion.

In the muddy conditions play became increasingly bogged down and scrappy.

Nonetheless there was plenty that Beverley could take encouragement from.

With a more settled formation their pack is now beginning to perform very well as a unit.

Francis Pickering, Martin Shaw and Scott Cameron again made an effective front row, not least in the open play where Cameron in particular proved a real handful.

Fraley Hopa and Worrall were always in the thick of things at wing forward and James McKay got through a lot of good work at number eight.

Vinnie Collingwood had several good runs down the wing and Tupai and Richard Bussey could well turn out to be the answer to Beverley's centre partnership problem.

All in all there is increasing hope for optimism in the Beverley camp.

A lovely break by Mike Kilgannon late on was spoilt by a loose pass which allowed West Park to counter attack down their left where their nippy winger Warren Hunt raced over for a final try.

After that the game steadily petered out in a series of scrappy forward exchanges and in the bitter cold few on the touchline will have been sorry to hear the final whistle.

This was a match both sides had badly needed to win to start climbing away from the foot of the table. In the end the day was undoubtedly Beverley's and if they can only bring a bit more composure into their play there seems no reason why they should not now start looking to overhaul some of the clubs immediately above them.
