A GROUP of Beverley residents are bracing themselves for battle once again after phone giant O2 put in an application to extend a mast in the town centre.

In 2003, the Beverley Mast Action Group was set up to fight plans for a larger replacement mast on the Beverley Town Cricket and Recreation Ground in Norwood Park.

Residents won the day after the application was refused and O2 decided not to appeal.

But now, five years on, O2 has put in another application to extend the current mast by five metres and add on extra telecommunications equipment.

But resident Sue Hurst, who spearheaded the last campaign, is determined to fight the plans once again.

She said: “Five years on and the situation is exactly the same. We set up an action group last time and we are doing it again.

“Do we really have to go through this every few years? It's ridiculous.

“A recreation club that supports health and activity is not the place for phone transmitter.”

Mrs Hurst is also objecting on the grounds that it will have a detrimental visual impact and a petition with 180 signatures has been handed in to planners.

But O2 insists the extended mast, which would involve sharing with Orange, would vastly improve coverage.

A spokesperson said: “The site will significantly improve 3G coverage and capacity to O2 customers in the local area and enable the network to cope with the huge increase in demand for mobile data.”

The application will come before planners on August 22.

“Most people from Beverley arn't from this planet, and do like to keep it in the family wink wink. Maybe they fear a larger phone mast might interfere with the signals of their spacecraft, as they are finding it hard to be down to earth and normal like most yorkshire folk!”

“Paul in Hull. If you are looking to move back to Beverley, I think Shameless Dave has a house for sale there...”

“Fair enough if it makes the vista look crap.

I live in town (Hull town that is) and when they said they were gonna make a 23 storey monstrosity across the road, I objected, Granted that's a bit more than a mast mind.

Problem with Beverley is (although it's a much nicer place than Hull, grew up there, hope to move back there) that anything remotely technological and tall sticks out like a sore thumb. I can see why the residents wouldn't want that.

    Good luck with your petition.”

“Dave doesn't need it any taller - if he ties the line on too high up his wife won't be able to reach to hang the washing out.”

“There are phone masts all over this country-everywhere you look. You already have a mast there what difference does it make if it is a bit taller. Nimbys.”

“Added benefit Dave - you would only need one clothes post you could tie one end of the line to the mast.”

“Exactly, xcalibr. The mobile reception at said property is second to none! (except for O2 users who can expect an improvement very soon by the sound of things).”

“I think the 'in term' is country mutants. If Beverley is so desirable why is it that shameless Dave still cannot sell such a superb sounding house for a mere £150k?The mobile phone mast might even help property values.”

“There's an awful lot of anger and frustration coming from people on here today. And who can blame you, having to live in polluted Hull, stinking of fish, cocoa and drains and ever increasingly spiralling towards the plug hole. Well, I'll tell you all now - there's a way out and its affordable to Hull people too! For less than £150k you can buy a very well presented and spacious 3 bed semi (2 doubles and a single) with off road parking, integral garage and enclosed garden in a residential area of Beverley (in an area that wasn't even touched by a drop of flood water last year). What's more, there's no unsightly (and potentially lethal) mobile phone mast anywhere near it! Stanifords have all the details...”
