Huntsmen are stepping up the campaign to end the ban on hunting with dogs in the run up to their new season.

Hundreds of hunting and countryside enthusiasts will be turning out for the Holderness Hunt's opening showcase meet on Saturday, October 31.

The number of riders and supporters was expected to fall away following the controversial ban on hunting with hounds or dogs.

But the ban appears to have raised the profile and led to hunts, such as the Holderness, showing they can stick to the law.

Brandesburton farmer Chris Richardson, hunt joint master, said: "Clearly we would like to see the ban repealed because it goes against tradition.

"The start of the hunting season is a good time to have another big push, and we will be working with the Countryside Alliance to keep up the pressure."

The hunt liaises closely with Humberside Police and informs them about every meet so officers know where they are if they get calls from the public.

The League Against Cruel Sports says its members and supporters will be out and about in the East Yorkshire countryside as part of its Hunt Crimewatch programme to gather evidence of illegal hunting activities.
