The traditional Boxing Day meeting by the Holderness Hunt has been called off because of bad weather.

The event, which takes place on Beverley Westwood, was cancelled by organisers after the frozen ground was too dangerous for the horses.

Hundreds of people had turned out to see the huntsmen and their hounds for an 11am start.

But, after attempting to get underway, the joint master Chris Richardson, from Brandesburton, told the Mail conditions were too treacherous for the horses.

“Tony, what a load of crap..if the fox population has to be controlled then why not shoot them??

Tell me, how is letting a pack of dogs chase a poor fox for miles and miles until it can run no more and then ripping it to shreds no crueler than a gun shot that it probably wouldn't have even known about??”

“One thing missing from the comments...it just shows you how effective the anti-hunting propoganda has been over the years! We have the spectacle of lots of very gullible people who seem to believe that hunting is 'cruel' !! The government's Burns Report said it was no crueller than any other form of fox control. We know from Labour MPs that many voted for it on some fanciful 'class' grounds, thinking it was a payback for the mining jobs of the 80s. Hunting is the most humane form of fox control.; it always controls and always ensures that the quarry species is kept in balance. It works with nature and not against it. It would never allow a quarry species to become too scarce - it saved otters in the seventies, when it drew the attention of scientists to the declining population . It is the greenest of all conservation sports. What is truly barbaric is the vitriol and prejudice which some people display against it.Those people would have been at the forefront of witch-burning and other archaic beliefs founded on blatant prejudice...”

“'most people in the countryside hate hunting'

    Generalisation of the sweeping variety.

And whoever said they removed a fox in their car? Hahahahaha I hope you got a good flea repellant and didn't get bitten.
Townies, if you don't like it stay home. We don't come and sit in your living rooms whilst you're watching Coronation Street do we?”

“Never seen a fox thumb a lift in car. A fox is not a dog, different number of chromosomes.
For me it istime to sign off posting on this one, the veggie burgers have been digested and the tree huggers are back on.”

“Hunting is disgusting and to "blood" a young child is vile. Hunting deserves to be banned, how people enjoy seeing another living creature ripped to bits for "sport" is beyond me, and the arrogance of some of the hunting fraternity belongs to feudal times. Good riddance to it!”

“Most people in the countryside think hunting is disgusting.

It's only the 'hard man' minority who have small down belows that think it's clever.

I shall look forward to the day when that generation is gone for good and companies take over farms so there's no more fox hunting, as they can actually afford for a few chickens to go missing.

I live in the country and I have taken dozens of foxes in my car away from the hunt before they have seen it/me. I have then released it. I will carry on doing this - it's like when people would help an old woman if gangs are trying to attack her.”

“David - a fox is a type of wild canine. So technically it is actually a dog. Would you chase a dog across a field and have other dogs rip its' guts out? No, you would be jailed for it, so why a fox?

Get better chicken coops, get guard dogs.....don't whinge just because you're not prepared to spend money on actually protecting livestock which we don't actually need to eat anyway.

Pathetic! Don't bring politics into nature. Left/right wing are people's personal choices and you shouldn't make fun of politics or religions.”

I must be there next time with my pitchfork and burning torch, we can't let anything other than humans survice, we must reign supreme!!!”
