Boy, 16, punched in face on bus
A 16-year-old boy was punched in the face after another passenger took exception to something he said.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which occurred on the 240 bus travelling between Hull and Skirlaugh between 4.45pm and 5.15pm on Tuesday January 29.
-

A man, believed to be between 45 and 50, approached the 16-year-old, who had boarded the bus at Durham Street, Holderness Road, and warned him about the language he was using. He then took hold of him and punched him, starting a minor scuffle, which was ended when other passengers separated them. The boy was left with a bruised jaw.
The man got off the bus in Skirlaugh.

“We've all lost our rag at some time. Let's hope both parties learned a lesson...if the youngster hasn't learned then something, then obviously, the old feller didn't bang him hard enough.”

“If little innocent johnny had had his mates with him it could of ended so differently http://tinyurl.com/bbwm8f8
Lets hope this smack taught him a lesson, but i doubt it, big and hard when with mates or thinking they can get away with it, but running back to mommy when they don't.”

“It's like the end of the Dark Knight, innit. Skirlaughman has done the right thing given the circumstances, but it's not exactly legal and society needs to play the straight bat at all times. So even though the evil Ratboy on the bus has been sorted out, our hero Skirlaughman has to run from the law. The hero Hull deserves, but not the one it needs right now. Might make a good film actually. Anyone want in on trying to get a screenplay together? I'm free Tuesdays.”

I hope I do understand something about parenting and I didn't mean to imply that there were no other ways of raising kids than wet liberalism or thuggery. I just genuinely wondered, in response to some of these comments, what the other posters thought. It does seem like some people here really believe that kids should be regularly hit every time they step out of line (taught a lesson, get what's coming to them etc), and that this is somehow LESS likely to make them nasty teenagers than being educated by the 'liberals' that everyone seems to hate so much.
I often see parents in Hull screaming and shouting at very small children, and smacking or threatening to smack them. So these kids definitely aren't getting a namby-pamby upbringing. And yet I find it hard to believe they will turn out to be well-adjusted, polite teenagers as a result.”

"Being a witness myself, I can tell you that the "boy" was blatantly using profane language throughout the whole journey, and for the 3 years that I have used the 240 from Hull to Skirlaugh the boy and his gang have disturbed all of the passengers and frankly I am disappointed that nothing has been done in the past."
In all of the previous 3 years had there been any complaints made to the bus company and the boys school about this behaviour? Had you made any complaint, if not why not?
The boy and his gang could easily have been barred from using the bus putting pressure on the parents to address the problem.
I had a situation where I was abused by kids going to school in a taxi. I rang the taxi firm found out which school they attended and the head got the problem sorted.
Why would people put up with this for 3 years when it is easily sorted? No need for violence.”

“Oh, bewildered1, I think that you are a simple minded cretin. I don't give a s**t about your ethics and views on child assault. If you'd have seen the incident, then you would realise how frivolous you sound.”

"Must admit it does sound rather amusing.
But, for those who are talking about this being the result of parents not disciplining kids enough, and everyone being forced to 'do it the way' of namby-pamby liberals etc:
Do you really believe that the kids who grow up to be mouthy yobs are the ones whose parents were 'namby-pamby' Guardian reading liberals, and the ones who behave themselves and sit nicely on the bus are the ones whose parents smacked them round the face if they swore?
Really??"
Thats an interesting question from Philp- any takers? I think the belted kids get into bother.
I think our prisons are, mostly, full of men and boys who are barely educated, below average height ( failure to thrive due to home environment) , self harmers and drug users. Parents bear some responsibilty but so does wider society.
If a dog was being aggressive and barking and someone booted it in the gob most of these people who support violence here would be up in arms.
The key to training a dog is positive reinforcement and strictly no violence. the same method works with children. Its not rocket science- look it up.”
