EAST YORKS: A church stalwart and her helpers have raised more than £900 for Howden Minster by laying on cream teas every Monday through the summer.

Joy Hawksworth and her team of volunteers welcomed people from all over the world as she hosted cream teas in the minster on Monday afternoons.

The last one of the summer was held on Monday.

Tea and coffee, cakes and scones, as well as a friendly chat, meant the total reached almost £1,000 this year.

Mrs Hawksworth was helped by her sister Yvonne Humble and her friends Joyce Redman and Sheilla Carrol.

She said: "I would like to say many thanks to everyone. We really enjoyed it.

"We had people from all over England come to it, we had people from Australia and Canada as well as local residents and friends from the church. We had a wonderful time."

EAST YORKS: Inspirational people across the East Riding are being sought for a Christmas show for television channel Sky 1.

Twofour productions is looking for nominations for the show, which will give those selected a life-changing surprise over the festive season.

The company is seeking inspirational people from the local community, whether it be someone struggling with illness, a fundraiser or carer who works tirelessly for others, or someone who has displayed an act of bravery.

Nominations with reasons and contact details of the person nominating can be e-mailed to christmas@twofour.co.uk and it must be kept a secret from the person being nominated.

HULL: A local artist is to exhibit his work at the John Street Gallery.

Greg Jones will exhibit his work at the gallery, which is in John Street, off Freetown Way, until Saturday, October 27.

There will be the chance for members of the public to buy his art, as well as mounted prints of his work.

It is expected to be the first of a series of exhibitions at the city centre gallery for the painter.

HULL: A singer from the city will perform on the live stages of Open Mic UK.

Hannah-Leigh Hopper made it through the regional rounds to compete for a place in the national finals to be held at the O2 Arena.

Open Mic UK 2012 is a national talent competition that searches for the UK's best singers, singer/songwriters, rappers and vocalists of all genres who perform either covers or original material.
