HULL: Border Force officers have seized 63,680 cigarettes that were being smuggled on a lorry through King George Dock.

The Treasury would have missed out on more than £15,000 in unpaid duty if the cigarettes had not been discovered.

The haul was hidden inside hollow metal beams in a Polish-registered specially-adapted lorry, which was carrying a load of wet wipe tissues.

It arrived on a P&O ferry from Rotterdam on Thursday and was due to travel to Wales.

A spokesman for the Border Force said no action will be taken against the Polish driver.

Sam Bullimore, of Border Force, said: "This seizure came about as a direct result of the skill, expertise and technical knowledge of our officers. Our staff work round the clock to keep our border secure and to make life as tough as possible for smugglers.

"Cigarette smuggling is not a victimless crime. It defrauds the public purse out of huge sums of money at a time when the country can least afford it.

"The gangs behind this sort of criminality are also often involved in other serious organised crime."

“Just wondering who was in charge of the artistic direction for this photo? It's wonderful, the light is just so ambient, the black background works so well, the subject is perfectly poised.

Surely an award is on the cards here? If I ever go into modelling I want this guy on the camera.

Absolutely no credit to the artist neither. Terrible. Can we have a credit before he's lost in cyber-oblivion?

This original conception could be worth a lot of money in a gallery. Oh, a comment on the story? BURN 'EM!”
