BRANSHOLME: Voles and shrews could be the star attractions of a free ecology event being held at the Noddle Hill Nature Reserve next weekend.

Starting at 9am on Saturday, October 13, a guided tour of the reserve aims to identify where small mammals might live on the site.

Jon Traill, conservation programme manager at the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, said: "Many small mammals are shy, elusive or nocturnal, making them hard to observe. We will be using lots of detective skills to search for signs that will help us to discover the small mammals on Noddle Hill and hopefully allow us to view them close up. "

Places on the tour must be booked in advance by calling 01482 441013.

EAST RIDING: Parish councils in the region are being urged to submit bids for funding from a £200,000 scheme aimed at supporting community projects ranging from proving new salt bins to repairing buildings.

The fund was set up earlier this year by East Riding Council, which has so far received 65 applications for financial aid.

Councillor Jackie Cracknell, portfolio holder for community partnership, said about 100 parish councils had yet to apply for anything.
