In Brief
EAST YORKS: With Christmas fast approaching, the Ministry of Defence is urging the public to consider giving to military charities as an alternative way of showing their support, rather than sending unsolicited parcels to personnel in Afghanistan.
Members of the Royal Dragoon Guards, which recruits from East Yorkshire, deployed to Helmand province last month and are not expected to return home until April.
Each Christmas, the British Forces Post Office (BFPO) is overwhelmed by the generosity of the public who send boxes of treats for individuals and groups in war zones.
But Colonel Stephen Heron, head of the BPFO, said unsolicited post clogs up the system and can prevent servicemen and women receiving post from their loved ones in time for Christmas.

He said: "While the sentiment behind the public wishing to send welfare parcels is gratefully acknowledged, it is far better that they donate to established Forces charities as they can focus support directly to areas of greatest need."

HEDON: Volunteers are needed to help run the "nerve centre" of community events in the town.
Alexandra Hall in St Augustine's Gate is appealing for helpers.
It has been at the centre of the town's community ever since 1986 and hosts almost all of its major public and civic events.
The business of running Alexandra Hall is done by a voluntary committee, which is asking for help to keep it open.
Anybody interested in lending a hand should call Val Wigglesworth on 01482 890034.
