In Brief
HULL: More than one in five people who are newly diagnosed with cancer in the city lack support from family and friends.
New research released by Macmillan Cancer Support found 22 per cent of the 1,200 patients new to cancer lack support from loved ones during treatment and recovery.
This equates to 250 patients per year, 50 of which will be facing cancer alone.
Fay Scullion, senior Macmillan development manager for the north east, said: "This research shows isolation can have a truly shattering impact on people living with cancer. Patients are going hungry, missing medical appoint- ments and even rejecting treatment altogether.
