“The council should stop wasting money and just admit that the cause of the flooding was entirely down to their incompetence. Building on flood plains was idiotic to begin with, but the true cause of the floods was the following:-
1) No maintanance of the drainage system, allowing the majority of drains in the affected areas to become blocked.
2) No repairs done to broken main sewers in the affected areas. Trees have been planted on top of or too close to the main saltglaze sewer pipes. The roots of these trees have smashed the sewer pipes and caused all sorts of problems including subsidance of properties.
3) Inadequate maintanance of existing flood defences such as the Brandesholme pumping Station and the city centre Water Exchange. The two backup pumps at the pumping station were useless because the cabling had been stolen and not replaced, and the management of the city centre Water Exchange was incompetent.
Floodwater was deliberately trapped and held in some areas and then drained away in the middle of the night hoping people would not notice.
Despite all the heavy rain and flooding up and down the UK recently, the flooding in Hull has not reoccurred. This is not because of any major change in our drainage system, The new flood defence system behind Catle Hill Hospital has never had any water in it. It was supposed to catch all the water coming down from the Wolds, but it is obviously another White Elephant.
The money would be better spent repairing the existing infrastructure which when working properly can, and has for donkeys years, coped quite well with our weather.”
