Budget switch 'will mean more transparency'

HULL: Council funding for grassroots, ward-based work in the city is being merged into a single budget.

The move comes after the Mail revealed how money earmarked for community safety projects, such as alleyway gating, ended up being spent on Christmas lights for Newland Avenue's traditional festive celebrations.

Under the changes, two current separate budgets for community-based initiatives and crime prevention schemes will be merged into a single budget for ward in the city.

Councillor Colin Inglis, who led a review into the separate funding regimes, said the new system would be much easier to understand and would be more transparent.

EAST YORKS: Labour East Riding Councillor Keith Moore is calling on MPs to oppose changes to the NHS.

Councillor Moore, who represents Goole, said: "All services look like being offered to the highest bidder from April and would allow any qualified provider, such as Virgin Healthcare, to outbid local hospitals.

"If this happened it will asset strip NHS facilities and firms would be able to cherry-pick the easiest and most-profitable procedures, leaving the NHS to pick up the tab for difficult and more expensive surgery."

People of all denominations are welcome.
