EAST YORKS: Beverley Armed Forces Day has been given a £500 funding boost after Beverley Lions agreed to contribute.

The event, which will be held in the town centre on Sunday, July 7, relies on volunteers.

Last year, it had been feared the day would be neglected in the shadow of events such as the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic Torch Relay. But businesses and the Lions stepped in to underwrite the costs and the same thing is happening this year.

The result of that community spirit is that Beverley Armed Forces Day has a family- friendly atmosphere.

To show his gratitude to the Lions, when the charity needed stewards for its Westwood bonfire in November, Beverley Armed Forces Day chairman David Elvidge helped organise a team of volunteers from the Defence School of Transport, where he works.

EAST YORKS: Leven Playing Fields Association, which helps provide sporting facilities to communities across a wide rural area, is planning its biggest fundraiser of the year.

The Annual Auction Sale in the Sports Hall starts at noon on Saturday, March 23. Before that, a jumble sale will start at 10am.

PFA Secretary Terry Etherington said the club had recently opened a petanque court and also provided netball coaching and tennis facilities.

Anyone who wants to get involved, either with fundraising, or with playing sport at Leven, should call Mr Etherington on 01964 542497.

EAST YORKS: Staff at Sainsbury's in Hessle have organised a car boot sale on Easter Sunday in the store's car park from 8am.

It will be raising money for Home-Start in Hull and care agency Danny's Dream.

Pitch fees will be £5. There is no need to book and people can pay on the day.

Anyone wanting more information should call Denise Hawley, at the Sainsbury's store, on 01482 562185.
