HE looked over the audience from beneath his horn-rimmed Buddy Holly glasses during a rock'n' roll day of memories.

Tribute artist Dave Remblence sang at St Stephen's shopping centre to celebrate the real singer's appearance at the ABC Regal Theatre in 1958.

Dave performed on the spot where Buddy himself sang for fans to mark the 55th anniversary of the gig.

"Buddy Holly was absolutely fantastic and he was the one who inspired so many big artists."

Dave is known as Bootleg Buddy and performs his shows across the country.

Shoppers stopped to watch the artist and tapped along to the famous tracks as they took a step back in time.

The cinema was demolished in 2004 to make way for a 40-acre development, including a shopping complex, housing, hotel and transport hub.

But the historical value has not been lost, because centre manager Jim Harris happens to be a true rock' n'roll fan.

Mr Harris said: "Dave is such a star, he's very talented. We had a few hundred people come and watch the show and they were all dancing away.

"There will also be a Blondie tribute on this weekend.

"We realise there are more significant dates and hope to bring a bit of nostalgia to the St Stephen's."

“This guy was playing at a small restaurant in Willerby just before Xmas. Even though most of the dinners were way younger than the Buddy Holly era, he had us all up and rocking and singing along (how did we know the words!?) from his first track. Unexpectedly one of the best nights out I've had, a real surprise. This guy is really good, if you are planning some kind of function I would highly recommend him.
And no I am not his relative!”

“I was in St. Stephen's when Dave Remblence was performing and it was good to hear some live music for a change.

The only problem was one possibly associated with the design of the building, the noise created by the music on the ground floor made talking to shop assistants difficult. Many of the shops had their own music playing and I think anyone with a hearing difficulty might have found it very frustrating.

In the future it might be better if they did a sound check throughout St. Stephen's so that those who want to can listen to the music, which was good, but those out shopping or going for something to eat can do so comfortably too.”
