Burst appendix can be life-threatening
APPENDICITIS is a swelling of the appendix that causes pain in the abdomen.
It usually requires urgent surgery to remove the appendix. If left untreated, the appendix can burst and cause life-threatening infections.
The condition starts as a pain in the centre of the abdomen and travels to the lower right-hand side, gradually becoming worse.
Health officials said it is not exactly clear what the causes of appendicitis are, although it is thought to occur when something, usually a small piece of faeces, blocks the entrance of the appendix, causing it to swell.
