MIKE wrote about his life and the person he was before he died.

His brother Matthew, 36, read his words, entitled Cancer And Me, at the funeral yesterday.

Mike wrote: "Two years ago, I was given the news that nobody on earth wants to hear – cancer.

"Anyone who knows me will confirm that I've always been a very fit and relatively health- conscious individual for the majority of my junior and adult life.

"Moments after the confirmation, I asked the question, the faint question of hope which I am sure every consultant the length and breadth of the country must hear every single day – is there hope of a cure and future survival? 'Yes', the reply.

"But only after major surgery to remove the area affected by the tumour – by this time it had the same dimensions as a standard bar of soap.

"This was to be in conjunction with numerous cycles of chemotherapy.

"Alas, all the best efforts from two very well respected oncologists came to no avail.

"Two years of having your body destroyed inside and out has left me approximately 5st lighter than my well- maintained super-fit fighting weight, and not far from anorexic should an onlooker unaware of my situation describe me."

Mike went on to write about his family and his extensive sporting achievements in life, particularly in karate, running, thousands of fitness classes and many other physical challenges.

Mike wrote: "It seems that the only part of life that was able to damage my system was to sneak in with no sign nor warning, taking the cheapest, lowest, dirtiest cowardly form – cancer."
