CAVE Castle players have taken a liking to the winner's rostrum in local alliances.

Having already secured two wins in the Hull and District, they collected a Humber Alliance win at Thorne.

Taking the honours were John Bell (15) and Richard Bird (18), whose eight-under-par 44 points was one ahead of Laceby's Eckland and Shore and Burstwick's Dean and Stephen Clavering.

Winner of the pro's prize was Burstwick's James Bisby on 42, one in front of Alliance secretary Chris Gray (Cottingham).

Bell said: "I was really just a spectator. Richard played very well, which was pleasing because his game has been off for most of the season, so it was good to see him come back to form. His driving was just tremendous."

The making of the Cave pair's score was four gross birdies, three for Bird, one of which was a two on the long par-three eighth and one for Bell on the 13th, which with a shot converted into a four-point nett eagle.

Bell delivered the coup de grace on the 18th when he scored a nett birdie following a ricochet out of the trees onto the fairway. Burstwick's cause as leaders was enhanced by the top-five finishes at Thorne of brothers Dean and Stephen Clavering and James Bisby and Les Walby.

The next Humber Alliance, a better ball, will be at Bridlington Links on November 16.

Better ball results: 44 pts J.Bell & R.Bird (Cave Castle), 43 pts R. Eckland & E. Shore (Laceby Manor), D & S Clavering (Burstwick), 42 pts J. Hirst & J. Kilvington (Bridlington Belvedere), J. Bisby & L.Walby (Burstwick).

League positions (after Thorne Alliance): 241 Burstwick, 238 Allerthorpe Park and Brough, 237 Laceby Manor, 235 Cave Castle, 230 Thorne, 229 Bridlington Belvedere, 228 Cottingham, 225 The Links, 202 Flamborough Head, 149 The K.P.Club and Cherry Burton, 145 Hessle.
