A Hull-based engineering company has landed a multi- million pound airport contract that will put it firmly on the business map in China.

Logan Teleflex in Sutton Road, east Hull, has won a major share of work to install a huge baggage handling system at a new airport in China.

The facility is currently being built in Kunming, a city in south-west China.

The contract comes after Logan Teleflex established a joint venture with Kunming Ship Building Equipment Company (KSEC) in June 2008.

This tie-up allows airports throughout China and the Asia Pacific region to benefit from the Hull firm’s products and services, via a local supplier.

It is this organisation, known as Logan KSEC, which has been awarded the £28m contract – the biggest project to date for the joint venture.

Mike Jeffery, Logan’s managing director, said the contract was the culmination of two years of work in establishing a foothold in the huge airport market in China.

He said: “With a highly credible Chinese partner, KSEC, Logan is well set to win further projects in this market.”

The baggage handling system will be installed in a new facility replacing the existing airport and is due for completion and commissioning in March next year.

The airport is set to receive its first flights on January 1, 2012, making it the fourth largest in China and the main regional airport for Yunnan province.

Logan engineers have spent months in Kunming designing the highly sophisticated baggage sorting systems, which will be manufactured in Hull.

Spanning a total conveyor length of more than six miles (10km), the system includes check-in facilities and 14 arrivals carousels.

Dave Reynolds, sales director at Logan Teleflex, said it was an important win for Logan KSEC.

He said: “It puts the organisation firmly on the map in China as a competitive manufacturer of high- quality cost-effective baggage handling systems.”

Logan can trace its origins in Hull back to 1956 and employs about 140 people.
