HULL North could be next on the Liberal Democrat's hit list as they unveil plans to shift resources into what they see as the 50 most winnable seats.

The Liberal Democrats claim they need a 6.3 per cent swing to take Hull North at the next General Election.

Although the seat does not feature on their list of most winnable Labour seats, Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg has vowed to make Denis Healy Hull's first Lib Dem MP, deposing sitting MP Diana Johnson.

He told the Mail: “In terms of Parliamentary seats, I am determined we will take Parliamentary seats off Labour, not only in Hull, but in my city of Sheffield and throughout the great cities of the north.”

Mr Clegg said: “I will do my best to make sure Denis Healy is the first Liberal Democrat MP elected in Hull.”

This week, Mr Clegg said he would shift resources into such seats in a bid to make good his promise.

In his summer message, Mr Clegg claimed “a Labour vote is now a wasted vote”, and said they would raise funds to target those constituencies.

He said: “We're re-jigging the party organisation so we're fit to win and fit to deliver our programme for government.

And he added: “There are no safe Labour seats.

“They will lose every by-election they fight in this Parliament.

“And at the next General Election, they will lose in their heartlands to the Liberal Democrats.”

The Lib Dem focus on Labour is a change of emphasis for the party, which in 2005 embarked on a “decapitation strategy”– aimed at unseating prominent Tory MPs, such as David Davis and Theresa May.

“The 2009 Euro elections will see the Lib Dems get a serious thrashing nationally (just like 2004) over their pro EU stance. Just hope the electorate remember their fanatical pro EU position in the next general election.”

“Agreed Diana Johnson has been conspicuous by her masterly inactivity (except slavishly voting with the government in every Parliamentary vote), but would I like a Lib Dem MP? No, that party is as loony as Stalinist "New Labour", they are all EU-mad control freaks, and the Tories don't give a stuff about ordinary folk so I'll vote for the apathy party if I could be bothered.”

“Why waste a vote on the Lib / Dems. If the LibDem MPs are only half as bad as the LibDem councillors we don't need them any where near a place of authority.”

“The only consolation with a Lib \ Dem MP, is that he will never feather his nest. The Lib \Dems are famous for never making a decision in case they upset some one so they will never say yes to expenses. Mind you they will never say yes to any thing that may be of benefit to us either”
