HIGH overtime costs currently mean the council's popular La Loggia café in the Ferens Art Gallery is closed on Sundays.

The council says paying café staff extra money through locally agreed overtime deals to work on Sundays make it "uneconomical" to open even though the gallery itself is open.

Interim chief executive Darryl Stephenson said: "The café is a good example of how in practice everyone loses.

"Despite demand from customers, the café remains closed on Sundays because the Sunday premium payments make it uneconomical to open.
