HUNDREDS of people marched on Beverley's County Hall today brandishing placards and chanting "Save Our Setts".

They are objecting to East Riding Council's planned £2.5m revamp of Beverley's Saturday Market, due to start on Monday.

The plan includes taking up the existing stone setts and reusing 30 per cent of them in other parts of the market.

More than 1,500 people have signed a petition objecting to the idea.

“If they deem cobbles dangerous then why did the spend a fortune lifting all those in Hightgate last year and relaying them all again”

“These Councillors are elected by local people and as such should be listening to the local people they are supposed to represent and act on their behalf. Instead they are just ignoring what the people of Beverley want and operating to their own agendas. They are not listening to public opinion. On top of this at time of austerity it is a total waste of money when no one wants it. Beverley is a historic market town and the setts are an integral part of it's identity. I don't believe any other similar historic town or city would be undertaking such a project. I don't see York ripping up the setts. Once it is done there will be no going back. To blame it on Health and Safety or similar reasons is absolutely ludicrous.”

“Why does everyone keep voting for, and electing, Parnaby and Co over and over again, if he is so far out of touch with his constituents?????

Or is the thinking behind voting in the East Riding, "better the devil you know" ??”

“Makes me giggle how Mr Parnaby had the bottle to say how people "didnt like" walking on them. Had to snigger when he also waffled on about how people with prams "didnt like" them neither. People and prams must have been made of sterner stuff back then when the cobbles were first laid all those years ago.
I absolutely peed meself though when he then made the point that the cobbles were dangerous. These cobbles have been down for donkeys years, so if they have been such a dangerous deathtrap to unsuspecting people who DO like walking on them, why didnt the Council bring it to the publics attention all those years ago with perhaps big warning signs stating that walking across the square could result in death or serious injury and was at their own risk because as Mr Parnaby says, they are dangerous, or did they mysteriously become dangerous only a few weeks ago?.How many horrible deaths and mutilations are these cobbles actually responsible for since they were first put down?. Hundreds must have been slaughtered on the setts for a Councillor to brand them dangerous.
His reasons for this obsession to rip up what makes Beverley unique or even quaint dont make sense, and no wonder he had to issue the statement that the Council didnt have an agenda. The suggestion he made that the protesters though did had an agenda could have been taken as an insult, but in a way he was right. Yes the protesters DO have an agenda. An agenda to stop Mr Parnaby and his wrecking crew.”

Parnaby now represents the Beverley consituancy afetr quitting Cottingham when he thought he would lose his seat.

He lives (I believe) within the Woodmansey constituancy - alongside that nice flat road near swift caravans. The other Coun. voting for the project include young Bradders Birmingham (Bev North) based in Cherry Burton & Phyliis Pollard based in North Cave!”

“From past experience Mr Leighton is very selective about what he remembers. Over the last 4 years he has been told about management issues problems with the ERYC Highways dept . Result NO ACTION

He was told about the Gypsey Race at Burton Fleming was blocked and needed clearing TWO years ago - Result NO ACTION

He was advised that the Queen did not want any money spent on Jubilee memorials but spent on charity project - Result JUBILEEE GARDEN IN BEVERLAAY (stolen from Highways budget for maintainence on potholes etc.

Very Very selective memeory our Nige.”

“Its wasting public funds, which at the moment in times of supposed austerity should be better spent. Which ever councillor (Parnaby. Who doesn't represent the ward. Nor does he live in the ward or town. Neither does he live in the constituency) came up with the plan should resign immediately and those who supported the idea should be named and shamed. Please, HDM list the councillors who supported this waste of £2,500,000 from the roads budget. Yet Tory Cllrs in Cottingham are complaining of pot holes, did they support the proposed vandalism of the heart of Beverley? Councillors need to justify why they can spend such vast sums here while the roads are in such disrepair, which the council do know about as they started more pothole spotting teams!”

“Presumably the same palms are being greased by the councillors who had the speed bumps replaced in Finkle Street Cottingham by lower speed bumps but still with a 30mph speed limit. A toatal waste of OUR money”
