Comet offers further discounts as administrators axe 41 stores
The administrators of Comet have today announced plans to close 41 stores by the end of November - unless a buyer can be found.
A closing down sale has begun at 27 outlets today and will begin in a further 14 early next week.

Comet sale signs at St Andrew's Quay, Hull
Redundancies were "inevitable", administrators said.
So far, no announcements have been made about the future of Hull's two stores, on Kingswood and at St Andrew's Quay, where trading was continuing as normal today.

However, "more generous discounts" will be offered in all of the chain's 200-plus stores.
Comet, which was founded in Hull in 1933, went into administration two weeks ago.
More than 50 redundancies have already been announced at the company's business centre in George Street.
Administrators said in a statement that they were continuing to hold discussions with parties who have expressed an interest in parts of the business, but it was necessary to begin a store closure programme.
Chris Farrington, of administrators Deloitte, said: "We are very grateful to the company's employees for their professionalism, loyalty and support at this difficult time and all employees will of course continue to be paid for all the work they do while the company is in administration."

“Went in there yesterday (Sunday). bearing in mind that half of their shop was electrical consumer goods they were only offering 10% off TV's, computers and cameras and some of those were display items which would be discounted anyway. I had my eye on a new camera at £234 with 10% off. Should have been £210 but was marked at £220. Someone can't do their sums or use a calculator properly. Didn't see one bargain. Am sorry but 10% isn't enough and although the shop was full, no-one was buying. Hope the staff secure another job soon.”

“Another trick to get us idiots in that over priced store like the last cuts its probably gone down to 15% instead of 10 like the last MASSIVE cuts”

“Hey Cloglet, you and I hold the record for the lowest rating! Lowest one I've ever had! I don't think they like us! Clearly selfish and greedy is good, compassionate and caring is bad! Oh dear, you and I seem to have got it all wrong :(”

“My comment disappeared really annoying.
Why does it matter how much discount you get on a television?
Spare a thought, whilst you're watching your new television whilst these redundant people are doing their budget to see if they can afford to heat their house over the winter.
A new television might be on your christmas list, but for many of these comet workers, a job would make them happy.
Also i think it's worth noting that in a space of month we have lost Mckain foods, Kimberley Clark, Seven seas and potentially comet, losing these companies will not only have an effect on the people made redundant but on Hull itself.
So, maybe consider that televisions won't feed you, won't keep you warm, but a job at Comet will. Think about these employees who are in limbo waiting to see if they've got a job!!!”

“"no thankyou I do not need your help" is what I always say in that awful place and then I say it again and again and then I have to leave because of the harraseement from the eagle eyed staff staring and waiting to pounse from every angle. I like other shops I do not like this one at all”

“the demise of comet is caused by diabolical senior management plus as of now one enormous perfectly legal corporate fraud. as extensively reported in the business press. the staff as usual are the forgotten also rans. the owners/directors will be laughing all the way to the bank.”

“Ghostwriter69, when I offered my friend, who's partner is about to be made redundant from Comet, my hopes and wishes that he found another job soon, I'm sure she appreciated that more than if I'd said "Great, how much discount can I get off a TV"!!!!”

“No ghostwriter69, my thoughts aren't going to do them any good, but I am sure they would prefer people thinking about them rather than their own pockets!”
