EAST RIDING: Community transport schemes are expanding to help disabled and elderly people reach shops and doctors' surgeries.

The county's four community transport groups ran more than 4,000 journeys to health centres between April 1 last year and March 31, and this is projected to increase to almost 7,500 in the following 12 months.

About 1,900 journeys to healthcare centres have already been provided between April and June this year.

The service helps people by replacing rural bus routes and by allowing those unable to drive to reach shops and doctors' surgeries.
