HULL: A cabinet portfolio holder says she is "very worried" over the health needs of refugees being housed in the city by private firm G4S.

The company behind the security fiasco at last summer's London Olympics won the contract to oversee refugees and asylum seekers' housing provision in Yorkshire last year.

The work was previously carried out by a consortium of local councils in the region, including Hull.

Speaking at a city council scrutiny meeting, social care portfolio holder Councillor Rilba Jones said she remained concerned over the issue, despite a report detailing how the health of each refugee arriving the city was checked every four months by primary health trust officials.

“I'm not surprised that there are concerns about the health of people living in G4S-provided "homes". Why should a security company (with zero experience of housing) that failed to provide Olympic security be considered competent to house anyone? G4S were paid £120 million of our money to provide housing throughout Yorkshire, Humberside and the North East to some of the most vulnerable people in our region: people seeking asylum, looking for some kind of safety and security in our region.

When 2 asylum seeking women in Leeds complained about their squalid G4S-provided housing, Leeds City Council ordered G4S to review all of their properties in the city. Hull City Council (and others) should do the same. One of these women in Leeds had a cockroasted-infested dump as a "home". When she found a cockroach in her baby's bottle she'd had enough. Her story was reported in the national press - http://tinyurl.com/d9csp4w
