ANOTHER wave of positivity is sweeping across the region following the news a huge wind farm has been given the go-ahead.

This week, it was confirmed a large wind farm will be built off the East Yorkshire coast, with 35 turbines to come from energy giant Siemens.

Dong Energy will build the 1bn euro (£822m) wind farm Westermost Rough, 8km off the coast, east of Hull.

Karl Turner, Labour MP for Hull East, said: "This is great news and exactly what the region needs.

"The Hull and Humber is well placed to be the renewables capital of the UK.

"Offshore wind and turbine manufacturing in region will guarantee jobs, help the environment and boost Hull's economy for future generations."

The decision gives a further boost to plans for the Siemens factory – part of the £230m Green Port Hull project – and is the first part of a huge framework deal.

Siemens and Dong Energy signed an agreement for the supply of 300 wind turbines, all of which are destined for wind farms off the UK coast, last summer.

Siemens confirmed to the Mail it would look to build a "portion" of these hi-tech turbines at its proposed new plant in the city.

Benj Sykes, Dong Energy Wind Power UK country manager, said: "We are very excited to go ahead with our next offshore wind farm at Westermost Rough.

"This is the first project we have brought forward to construction in the North East and we are looking forward to working in the area during construction and over the 20 years during the operational life of the wind farm.

"We are excited about the potential of this new technology and deploying the 6MW turbine on this scale."

Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Edward Davey, said: "This offshore wind farm will feature cutting-edge turbine technology and will bring further jobs and investment to the East Coast, whilst also generating enough clean energy to power 200,000 homes.

"This confirms the UK's position as being one of the best places in the world to invest in offshore wind."

Construction of the Westermost Rough offshore wind farm will begin in first half of 2014 and the farm is expected to be fully commissioned in the first half of 2015.

John Sparrowe, managing director of Northern Divers, said he hoped Dong Energy's decision could lead to local companies benefiting from the scheme.

The Hull company has experience with marine renewables, having worked on a wind farm in the Dutch sector of the North Sea.

Mr Sparrowe said: "If Dong Energy has a policy of using local businesses wherever possible, then the decision to go ahead with this offshore wind farm is very good for the Humber area."

Last week, Siemens' head of energy for UK and North West Europe Matthew Chinn said the Green Port Hull development will happen – if the right levels of support continued, not just in Hull but, crucially, from central Government.

The 35 Siemens 6MW turbines will have a total capacity of 210MW.

The 6MW machine has the biggest capacity of any wind turbine in use anywhere in the world, and Westermost Rough will be the first wind farm to use the 6MW turbine on a large scale.

    “I suggested on Sat, that Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Edward Davey, is either a liar or is incompetent.

    I forgot that he's one of our 'Glorious Leaders' so can multi-task & be both, carrying on the great tradition as demonstrated by predecessor Chris Huhne.

    “Oxoneast - oh no! Are you saying that a UK company has bought a share in a loss making Danish company? As you have figures to support this please confirm: the Danish West coast wind power experiment was a disaster; they failed to produce the amount of energy planned; they sold the little they produced (best about 2-4am) to German industry. Ever since they have been looking for someone to share in their losses. No surprise to me that the UK tax payer (through levies which go to private companies) end up picking up the cost. We fund the white elephants for the whole of Europe don't ya know! I'm more concerned with families and the elderly going cold this winter.

    It was shocking that someone marked down the other contributors. I either leave alone or mark up. Desperation for the person who marked the others down - or what?!”

    “In 2009, Cosalt set up a dedicated renewables division to supply inspection and testing services plus marine safety, lifting equipment, tooling and height safety products to the renewables sector, particularly offshore wind farms. The company UK operational bases at,Aberdeen,Humberside,Newcastle,Edinburgh,and an offshore company in Norway (Cosalt Myhre Marine) that offer immediate access to the wind farms being built on/off the UK coast.In the Humber area alone the forecast is for an additional 5000 wind turbines to be in operation by 2020. Cosalt Wind Energy will enable the Company to accelerate its penetration of this market.
    Cosalt acquired 80% of Cosalt Wind Energy Ltd from APRO (Denmark Company) in 2011. Cosalt Wind Energy Ltd commenced with a framework agreement with Siemens to supply specialist engineers for its offshore wind turbine activities, which are conveniently located near to Cosalt's operations around the UK. (CWE employ approx 76 engineers,on contracts with Siemans.) 75 employees at WorkWear in Stockton.North Sea supply,maintenence since 1890 (thats experience.) Over 400 employees,health & safety expert credited qualified company.”

    “( "The 35 Siemens 6MW turbines will have a total capacity of 210MW." )

    Wow 200,000 homes lets all vote for him !!!! BUT

    The following info is taken from the
    Department of Energy & Climate Change ( DECC ) & Grid figs
    ( Digest of United Kingdom Energy Statistics ( DUKES)
    http://tinyurl.com/n4k7n8 )

    See Pages 121, 140, 144, 160, 186

    Shows the UK Capacity factors, (also known as Load or Production Factor)
    ( It's the % of possible output, that is ACTUALLY produced)
    Coal = 42 %,
    Gas = 62 %,
    Hydro = 35 %,
    Nuclear =61 %,
    Pumped storage = 14 %,
    Solar = 8 %,

    Wind = 27 %,

    So according to Daveys own DECC figs the Production Factor for wind is 27%

    Meaning the average output is
    210 MW x 0.27 = 56.7 MW / 200,000 homes = just 288 W per house

    Your lighting probably uses more than that !
    a computer 160 W, your kettle will be 2,000 W

    Powering 200,000 homes…. NO .
    It's more phucking lies….again !!!

    The man is either a liar or is incompetent.”

    “These ugly monstrosities are the schoolboys answer to our energy needs and I totally agree with Paul_at_Hull.

    'Let's all go green' may sound nice and jolly and 'responsible' but we never ever look properly at the side effects of anything, as Paul says these things are killing wildlife and onshore pollute the countryside by destroying the view.”

    “Karl Turner MP supports this eyesore does he - I suppose he won't be the one looking at it. It is supposed to help "guarantee jobs" and "help the environment." Really?

    What jobs? How many, for whom and when? The talk is cheap talk - just wind! I'll bet the jobs will be German installation crews. The locals may be lucky to make the tea for them. We know the story by now.

    Environmental benefits - don't make me laugh. These off-shore turbines are a slaughterhouse for wild birds which have to go right out to sea as we fish the ocean dry.

    With a scheme as **** as this I am not in the least bit surprised it gets Karl Turner's full support.”
