IT IS more than 50 years since the last Conservative Member of Parliament for Hull was elected.

But two senior Tories visiting the city this week claimed the party's local fortunes are on the up.

Shadow justice secretary Dominic Grieve and shadow prisons minister Alan Duncan toured Hull Prison and Winifred Holtby school in Bransholme before speaking at a lunch for party supporters and invited guests at a city centre hotel.

Mr Grieve effectively replaced David Davis in David Cameron's shadow cabinet after the Haltemprice and Howden MP's dramatic resignation nearly two years ago over the issue of detaining terror suspects for 42-days without charge.

He said the looming General Election was not the only reason for the pair's visit.

"As part of my job I have been visiting a lot of prisons over the last couple of years and during that time I have heard of lot of good things about Hull Prison," he said.

"I was keen to visit the prison and find out for myself some of the initiatives going on there.

"I was particularly impressed by the commitment to the local community because a high proportion of inmates are from the Hull area and the rehabilitation programmes going on there have a focus on preventing re-offending."

Mr Grieve said he was also impressed by schemes at Winifred Holtby aimed at helping pupils with emotional and behaviour problems.

"Both of us were extremely impressed with the leadership being shown by the staff at the school," he added.

“Our lass likes Cameron so she's voting Tory, she knows all about Labours destruction of our country and that we were both better off and happier under Thatcher in the 80's. I'm not totally convinced by Cameron and agree with Arthur the BNP can poll more then the Tories locally.”

“I agree with Alan, George and Alf. The last Tory to be any good for Great Britain was Sir Winston Churchill. Since then every Tory PM or wannabee Tory PM has tried, in vain, to emulate him, and been a total and utter disaster. Ted Heath was the biggest traitor we have seen. Thatcher did a bit of good in some areas, but was fundamentally a nasty person, with selfish, greedy policies which only benefitted people with money. She opened the flodgates for compensation claims by allowing solicitors to advertise. She shut the Mental Hospitals to "save money". She privatised as much as she could get away with to "save money". OK then, why am I still taxed to the hilt?? John Major had a note above the fireplace in 10 Downing Street reading "On the whole I'd rather be playing cricket" - Ok so clear off and watch cricket. Labour tried to emulate Thatcher by becoming "New Labour" and what an utter disaster that was - all glitz and showbiz, with some very nasty policies. THe LibDems of course are still puffing on their cannabis spliffs deciding to go with whatever wacky scheme some doped up idiot from the chettering class suggests.
To restore sanity in this country we need a party of common sense. UKIP or the BNP are the only ones I see worth voting for, the rest of the "minority" parties are single issue or just clueless.”

“Jim's lass - you are obviously too young to remember what the last Tory government was like but in 1997 many of their MPs who thought that they had a job for life lost their seats when Labour was voted in with a massive 179 seat majority when the electorate could take no more of their arrogance and lies. And yes, a couple of them did end up behind bars.

The theme tune of New Labour was "Things Can Only Get Better" and many of us believed that they would but the last 13 years have proved that all MPs, with one or two notable exceptions (such as Frank Field) are as bad as each other.

As Alan says, we all need to vote for a small independant party to show the main 3 parties what we think of them. Simply not voting isn't the answer.”
