Council hits back over 50K jobs claim
City council officials have hit back at figures released by the Taxpayers' Alliance showing the authority employed 270 staff earning more than £50,000 in 2011/12.
The TPA compared the Hull total with just 63 staff at the East Riding and 52 at North Lincolnshire Council. The data was compiled after the pressure group submitted identical Freedom of Information requests to all councils across the UK.

But, in a statement, the city council said comparisons were unfair as some authorities did not include education staff who provided services to schools and colleges. It also said Hull funded a number of joint posts, including the coroner.
"Taking all of this into account, a fair figure for all management posts paid at present above £50,000 is 63. This is competitive with neighbouring authorities and nowhere near the 270. The council is also examining management structures to see if further savings can be made," it said.

However, Hull-based TPA co-ordinator Andrew Allison said the council's own accounts for 2011/12 listed 270 "officers" on £50,000-plus salaries.
He said: "Either they are officers or education staff. Other councils' accounts differentiate between the two but Hull's do not."

“Well the council has a saying that if you pay peanuts you get monkeys. I believe that if you pay more you just get bigger monkeys. If we are paying all this money for all of these managers why are we paying even more money for the people at the top. No free buses, no free meals, council tax rises, fortnightly bin collections, bedroom tax. Where is it all going to end. Not to mention the tax that goes un-noticed, the insurance premium tax. Why should the government get a slice of my car or house insurance. It's a disgrace. What will be next. Mobile phone tax, broadband tax, or satellite tv tax. They will soon get us to pay to send our kids to school, pay for our own healthcare and fill in our own pot holes on our street.”

“The TPA is a small bunch funded entirely by rich Tories. They generate right-wing rubbish which lazy journalists print because it's easier than looking for real news.”

“Even if you accept what the council say, (and thats a big if) given the shocking state of Hull educational standards, does anyone in the working in Hull's schools deserve to be on £50k+ a year?
Worker1|1, I thank you for flattering me, by taking the time to create a fake username soley for my honour.”

“Don't two. You find it difficult to understand that there are people who work in local authority who would rather be there than private industry.
Just as there are brilliant surgeons who would rather work in the NHS than private medicine.
Your problems is thinking money is the be all and end all and to many, it is not.”

“If these guys on over 50 grand a year were as good as what they pretend, believe you me, they would NOT be working for a Council. They would be working in the private sector where the rewards are far greater, but as these staff know full well, the private sector would soon find out what frauds they really are.”

“The Taxpayers' Alliance are just a bunch of time-wasting trouble-makers and shame on the HDM for reprinting one of their press releases without bothering to do even the most basic of fact-checking.”
