Supermarket giant Tesco is poised to appeal against a council decision to reject plans to redevelop its oldest store in Hull.

Britain's biggest retailer says the £40m scheme at the Hall Road store in north Hull would create 200 new jobs.

It wants to demolish the existing building and replace it with a new first-floor store similar in size to the Tesco Extra at the St Stephen's centre, with car parking below.

But, as reported on the Mail's website yesterday afternoon, planning committee councillors voted overwhelmingly against the proposals at a meeting yesterday.

Although Tesco has 28 days to lodge an appeal once officially notified of the committee's decision, the Mail understands it will challenge the ruling.

At the meeting, Tesco's planning manager Mark Thorne said: "The current store is a tired old 1980s building that does not meet the demands of our customers.

"A £40m investment will bring it up to modern standards and create 200 jobs.

"The location will be a focal point in Beverley Road through its bespoke design."

But councillors were less than impressed with the plans after hearing objections from residents worried about noise, disruption and potential security problems associated with the car park.

Councillor Tom McVie said he was unhappy over the proposed relocation of the store's petrol station close to houses in The Queensway.

Others criticised the idea of creating a new access road from the site on to nearby Beverley Road.

Councillor John Nicholson said adding extra traffic to an already busy dual carriageway was a non-starter.

“Amend my previous comment to one against, two for and two abstentions.

Can anyone tell me if the appeal has taken place yet?”

“Following on from David Mill's comments, at least your councillors turned up for planning meetings and voted. In Coventry last January only 5 bothered to attend, one voted against the Tesco's planning application, two against and two pathetic individuals abstained; it was a farce!”

“We have the same problems with Tesco proposing to demolish the existing store and build a massive new store on what is a housing estate, petrol station to be moved next to the local church and be open 24/7. Our big concerns include massive overdevelopment, and understore parking it is known by the national counter terrorism security office and supported by MI5 and the home office that terrorist have identified Tesco under store parking as a soft target and are recommending that this type of parking should not be permitted. Tesco has also been identified as a target for terrorist by security in Israel. for us in coventry there is also a very serious problem with traffic conjestion which can only get worse. As for the claims of taking on 200 new staff, dont believe them in coventry they have already got rid of these and will only be taking them back on when the new store opens, and at worse terms and conditions. There are too many other objection to list here but I could list some more if any one is interested.”

“Yes PJM in Hessle, you can have the store for me. In N. Hull it'll be the biggest building around apart from some flats, that are coming down, and the University. It'll be like having the Queen Mary parked outside your front door. Get rid of it, it will be a great eye sore. As far as creating jobs goes, well, tesco are doing their damdest to get the cudtomers to check out themselves”

“What I cannot understand is Tesco they have been put back quite a few times on this. The major complaint is the location of the petrol station, so why don't they move it away from peoples houses.”

“I think it's quite right that the Council's Planning Committee should take all stances into consideration when making a decision on this issue. If the plans aren't feasible, realistic, are unsafe and detrimental for valid reasons then it should be rejected this time around. Nine votes to one isn't exactly a close call is it? I'm sure that the council would wish for building jobs and what seems to be permanent retail jobs for this city but they can't ride roughshod over their own regulations.”

“A major retailer wants to invest in Hull, create 200 jobs, plus the construction industry gets a boost, and our council denys them. If I worked at Tesco's I'd be tempted to say "stuff it then" and pull out of Hull all together. Its a bit highhanded of this council to tell a company "your all right as you are, so no you can't expand".”

“The Tesco store on hall road is pretty poor as far as modern supermarkets go - especially the outdoor layout. I would love them to go ahead with these plans.”
