Crash barrier call after fatal accident
A couple are calling for crash barriers outside their East Yorkshire home following the death of a driver.
Malcolm and Christine Taylor said the accident is the fourth serious crash on a sharp bend outside their home in Great Hatfield, near Hornsea.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident which happened on the approach road to the village from the direction of Hornsea.
As first reported on the Mail's website, the motorist died when his car crashed through a fence and slammed into an elm tree in the couple's garden.
Paramedics fought to save the unnamed 23-year-old man's life, but he was pronounced dead at the scene at Elm Lodge in Hornsea Road.
Emergency services were alerted by Mr and Mrs Taylor when they were awoken by the noise of the single-vehicle accident at 12.45am yesterday.
Mr Taylor, 67, said: "We do not know the circumstances of this particular crash on the bend, and it is very sad that somebody has died.
"But we have noticed a lot of drivers tend to ignore the warning signs and 40mph speed limit signs, which is very worrying.
"I am not saying that speed was the cause of the latest accident, but there was a pretty violent impact with the elm tree."
Mr and Mrs Taylor are among those who have campaigned for a 40mph speed limit on that section of the Hornsea to Hull road through Great Hatfield.
There have been four serious crashes outside their detached home since they moved to the Hornsea Road property about 20 years ago.
Mr Taylor said: "We were awoken by the noise of the latest accident and got torches to go outside and see what had happened.
"The car had crashed through the garden fence and hit the elm tree.
"It was very obvious that, sadly, he had died from his injuries.
"We telephoned the police and ambulance service and they attended very quickly."
Mrs Taylor said: "We would like to see crash barriers outside our property because there is always damage to repair following these accidents."
Police investigating the cause of the crash said the grey MG car was travelling in Hornsea Road into Great Hatfield when it was in collision with the tree.
A Humberside Police spokesman said: "The 23-year-old driver was treated at the scene by ambulance staff, but sadly died from his injuries."
Anyone with any information about the accident is asked to call police on 0845 6060222.
