A look at the activities of Hornsea District Walking Club, by Stuart Kemp

December has been another busy month for the group with a packed programme of events and walks.

However we were forced to cancel our first trip in ages as the walk due to start in Brompton, fell victim to the snow and the roads became impassable.

This did not stop us on Sunday, December 7 when we set off from Sledmere for a short five-mile walk as a prelude to our annual Christmas dinner which was held at the Triton Arms in Sledmere.

It was a bright but cold day with the covering of crispy snow adding a further dimension to the lovely Wolds scenery around the village and we worked up a great appetite.

The day was a success and several club awards were handed out to those club members who have made significant contributions over the past year.

The whole event was enjoyable and quite a highlight in the walking club calendar.

A walking programme from the new year is now ready and will start on New Year's Day with a gentle stroll at Great Hatfield which will hopefully blow away some of the Christmas excesses and herald in the new year.

We will be joined by members of the Leven Walking Club and it will be rounded off by a carvery lunch at the Wrygarth pub in Great Hatfield.

Then on Sunday, January 11, we will be walking from South Cave at the southern end of the Yorkshire Wolds, which will take in the spectacular views across the Humber as well as the attractive Brantingham village and dale.

Other walks planned for early in the year are Scarborough, Hutton le Hole and Wayrham, as well as three weekends away, including a trip to Shropshire in Easter.
