BEVERLEY: Riders are pushing hard to have a controversial cycle route approved on the Westwood.

The East Riding Council proposal has been criticised in the town by people who say it will "urbanise" the environment.

Because the proposal involves taking a strip of common land alongside the B1230 the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will have the final say.

Peter Goldthorpe, owner of independent bike shop Minster Cycles in Norwood, said: "We've got a road there already and it was common land before anyone put tarmac on it.

"The outlying villages of Beverley have benefited from a cycle path.

"The one from Woodmansey is well used and so is the one from Cherry Burton.

"But, from Walkington, you take your life in your hands.

"Installing a cycle route would encourage more people to cycle into Beverley."
