Yesterday, his father Stephen Hall, 52, appeared before Hull Magistrates' Court charged with murder.

He spoke only to give his name, date of birth and address during a brief hearing.

Mr McGlone, himself a father to young boys, was no longer with either of the mothers of his children. He lived with family friends Karen and Scott Stewart, close to where he was found.

Mrs Stewart, 52, said: "I have known Shorty his whole life. Everyone who knew him is devastated by what has happened.

"He was a devoted dad. He loved his two kids.

"Shorty had his problems, but he was trying to turn his life around and get settled."

Mrs Stewart said she knew Mr McGlone from when both families used to live on the city's Greatfield estate.

Mr McGlone's mother, Jude, is no longer with his father and has remarried.

"Jude is a lovely woman and a great friend," said Mrs Stewart.

"Shorty had been living here for a while after he had problems with his landlord.

"I know Shorty loved his mum dearly and Jude loved her sons to bits.

"She is just devastated."

Mrs Stewart, a care home worker, was told of the death on Tuesday morning.

She said: "We just couldn't believe it when Jude's husband called to tell us that Shorty had died."

Jayne Bolder, 24, of east Hull, is the mother of one of Mr McGlone's children.

She said: "We were together for about a year and a half.

"Keith loved playing on the PlayStation and watching wrestling.

"He cared for his son a lot. He was always happy and a really nice person who cared about other people.

"I was devastated when I heard what had happened. I didn't believe it when I heard.

Vicky Roberts, 24, of Catherine Grove, saw paramedics trying to revive a man, now known to be Mr McGlone.

She said: "He was laying on a stretcher in the front garden of the house opposite us. It was awful.

"We think two men live in the house. No one knew their names.

"They moved in around Christmas time."

In a statement, Humberside Police said: "This appears to be an isolated incident, which led to the tragic death of Keith McGlone.

"Mr McGlone died as a result of injuries he received on Monday night, at an address in Catherine Grove.

"Specially trained police officers are working with his family.

"Inquiries are continuing, in order to piece together the circumstances that led to Keith's death."

Mr Hall was remanded in custody until January 30, when he will appear at Hull Crown Court.
