EAST Riding Council leader Stephen Parnaby was saddened to hear the Tour de France will not be passing through.

But he said its start in Leeds was still good for the region.

Councillor Parnaby said: "It's disappointing but the organisers have to set routes that will work.

"I want to be positive. People in Hull and the East Riding will still have an opportunity to see the tour and hopefully other cycling events will be developed around it for us to be included in."

He thought Cllr Geraghty's criticism was "unfortunate".

Cllr Parnaby said: "Organisers of these big events don't like negative press.

"The decision has been made so let's be positive about it."

“Well Mr Parnaby, under your leadership the country life magazine rated East Yorkshire as the worst county in England to live in, so no surprise that TDF bypassed it. One witty commenter stated that "Maybe the Tour de France organisers couldn't find a route devoid of pot-holes!". Amusing but sadly very true!”
