A DOG and a cat are thought to have died after swallowing rat poison left on playing fields.

The pets are believed to have died after ingesting the poison on King George V Playing Fields, opposite Haltemprice Leisure Centre, off Gorton Road, Willerby.

Amy Bryan, of Hull Animal Welfare Trust, said she has heard reports a cat and a dog had died.

She said: "The cat was apparently found near a bowl containing what is thought to have been rat poison.

"We don't know what happened to the dog, other than it died after ingesting some of the rat poison.

"It's possible whoever laid it objected to dogs being walked on the playing fields.

"The playing fields are very popular with dog walkers.

"It is just awful. It is criminal. How anyone could do this is beyond me."

Miss Bryan, who is manager of the trust's Sunnydene animal shelter near South Cave, has made enquiries with local veterinary practices.

She said: "No one knows any more.

"I would urge pet owners to keep a close eye on their animals."

Vet Annie Gleed, of Hull Vets4Pets, in County Road South, west Hull, said it is important pet owners act quickly if they suspect poisoning.

She said: "Rat poisoning is something we come across now and again.

"If an animal is brought to us within the first couple of hours, we can make the animal vomit the poison by giving it an injection."

Mrs Gleed urged owners to make themselves aware of the symptoms of rat poisoning.

She said: "An animal that has ingested rat poison will become very lethargic.

"There may be haemorrhaging from the gums, too.

"Rat poison can be fatal in cats and dogs, particularly if it is not detected quickly."

Mrs Gleed said she doubted the poison would have been laid by a professional pest controller.

She said: "Usually, councils or appointed pest controllers are very careful when they put down poison.

"They will ensure it is well hidden."

No one from East Riding Council, which owns the park, was available for comment.

“If you don't like me being overbearing now you know how living with a barking dog is like! Barking dogs can make people's lives a misery, I should know, I was woken up at 8am on weekends by barking dogs while having my lie in after a stressful week at work, they would then go on to bark aggresively through the day, barking dogs are a serious anti social issue so yes I have strong issues on barking dogs and their owners. People don't like Jehovah's Witnesses imposing their religion on to them on their doorsteps or double glazing salesmen ramming their products down their throats over the phone, I don't like dog owners imposing their animals on me out in public or in private.

You said dog dirt was less harmful then litter that could easily be picked up and put in a bin, dog dirt is a very serious threat to the public and environment that people need to be aware of, if someone was dumping toxic waste on a field or park there would be uproar, dog dirt poses a similar threat, after what you posted I had to state the truth, if just one person is now fully aware of the real dangers of dog dirt then that surely is a good thing.”

“I don't have any pets. I don't like 'em. But I don't hate 'em and I don't see the point of poisoning any of 'em. Now, other peoples kids, that's a different story. But still, I manage to refrain from going around supermarkets injecting bottles of kid's drinks or goodies with rat poison.
God didn't put me on earth to waste my life pickin up ---t. I did enough of that when I was a taxi driver.”

zola1984 is hardly a troll. She's saying it like it is

Do all you dog walkers take some sort of anti bacterial cleanser to wipe away the residue of your dog's droppings ?

"if you're out for a stroll on a field or park guaranteed you will have a dog run up and jump on you, most times the owner just smiles or laughs and says 'he won't harm you' "

No, maybe not, just leave their filthy pawprints all over you !

As for "Butt out on matters that don't concern you" I'm afraid it does concern you if you happen to tread in it and trail it inside”

I tell you why, I was warned about trolls like you who have opinions on everything from dogging to BAE and now to dog pooh (yes my colleagues and I have had a good laugh reading your so called opinions) you really are a cretinous know it all, copy and paste is a wonderful tool!!! I feel very sorry for your neighbours you are the kind moron who suffocates people with your over bearing views. Why you feel the need to interfere in matters that don't concern you I will never know. Who do you think you are giving me abuse, you have just made this personal with me and you clearly do with other people, as you say you have seen how it ends up on other threads! No surprise there then. Butt out on matters that don't concern you, as I previously said #getalife! OWNED!!!!!!!”
