DOZENS of people turned out for the British Heart Foundation's annual sponsored walk across the Humber Bridge.

It was the 25th anniversary of the event.

Miss Hull and District 2012, Jessie Palmer, as well as Miss Teen Hull 2012, Chloe Tong, cut the ribbon to officially start the walk yesterday.

Charity mascot Mr Hearty and volunteers were on hand to help throughout the day.

Michael Nicholson, 65, of Beverley, took part for the fourth consecutive year.

He said: "This is my Sunday morning training session and it's nice to do it with company.

"It's a brilliant event."

Ellie Birch, 43, of Sproatley, walked with friends and family in memory of her father, Paul Redhead, who died from heart disease in 2008, aged 69.

She said: "We do the walk as a family and it's grown a bit with friends."

Last year's walk raised £4,800 for the Mending Broken Hearts Appeal.

Raymond Dove, leader of the mending Broken Hearts group in Hull, said: "It's about exercise and we want people to get out in the fresh air."
