The first non-Kcom residential broadband service is being connected in Hull today.

Jonathan Gibbins, from east Hull, will be the first person in the city not to have to rely on Kcom's hardware or technology for his Internet connection.

Mr Gibbins will also be able to use the service to make telephone calls.

The system is being installed by Hull firm One Point IT.

Martin Lauer, managing director of the firm, said: "As a local businessman, I simply love the idea of Hull gaining its independence in terms of telephone and internet provision.

"I am very proud of my part in giving East Yorkshire residents more choice."

“I have searched for Telecoms Hull and there appears to be another company able to offer the same service, East Riding Telecoms have all the prices on their website, and details about business telecoms, doesn't say if they do residential though.....”

“Hi Guys; as the network provider of this service we would like to address a few of the comments below.

    1. The technology is not WiFi (this is the technology used for home routers, laptops etc).
It is wireless but uses different frequencies, different protocols (geek speak!) and it has military levels of security (128bit AES for the geeks again!), it is not affected by rain, snow or fog (which is quite important for England!).
    2. It has nothing to do with KC lines whatsoever, It does not use any mobile phone company or dongles it uses our own private network of transmitters used exclusively for high speed broadband services.
    3. It is not new and the service has been operating successfully outside Hull for a number of years and businesses have been connected in Hull since January. The only thing that is new is this service is now offered to residential in Hull for the first time!
    4. We are a full ISP offering a premium service and there is no NATing Mr Chinese DVD Gang! xx

    Kind Regards; Quickline”

“Karoo now say I could get up to 8 Mb/s oh yeah right how come it's been a constant 500 kb/s downstream and 250 up for the last ten years, nowt's changed except the bovine faeces they spout.
If someone else has faster speeds great, the two baked bean cans and bit of string karoo technology belongs in the dark age, even my Ouija Board and carrier pigeons are faster. And don't give me any more twaddle I used to be a network engineer... the teccy lads at karoo are very good though, praise where it is due.”

“it looks a way better alternative to kc the speed is so much better the issue with kc is that you have to have a kc line and pay line rental to get karoo- people like me will go for it due to principle of things.”
